Books Lately

Another month of reading has come and gone! Hard to believe, right? What is even harder to believe is that Steph and Jana started this link up a year ago! Happy Anniversary to Show Us Your Books! Obviously, a book nerds favorite day of the month! Let’s take a look at my books lately.

The Light of Day by Kristen Kehoe

This book surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. You have two broken souls, Cora who had a strained relationship with her mother growing up which eventually led to a  wild and crazy life style that found her in rehab. Then there is Jake, a handsome baseball player whose dream was shattered when he had to have surgery on his elbow and is not sure if he will ever pitch again.

I liked the pace that the author took while developing the relationship between Cora and Jake. It wasn’t like they first met and are hopping in to a relationship. It had a realistic development that I appreciated. Also, I really liked the side story with Cora’s mom and her illness, and the friendship with AJ and Liam.

I loved Cora and Jake together and I really liked the style of writing from the author.

Bottom Line: This is a book about finding yourself. This book is a love story between two broken souls. This book is about a rocky relationship between mother and daughter. This book is about forgiveness for yourself and others. Who should read it? Everyone.

*I was provided a copy of The Light of Day by the publisher and author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*

Rebel by Skye Jordan

This is the second  book in the Renegade series. (You can read my review for the first, Reckless here.) It sort of has the same plot as the first book. You have the damaged girl (Rubi) who has a problem committing to a relationship out of fears from her past. The “bad boy” stuntman (Wes) who has a huge heart and is almost too perfect. And the fight back and forth within the girl to fall in love and allow herself to be happy. Even though it followed the same recipe, I still really enjoyed this read! Plus, Lexi and Jax are back from the first book. The chemistry between Wes and Rubi is hot hot hot from the start and they can’t resist each other for very long. You get a lot of back story on why Rubi is so guarded, and I really enjoyed reading about it and seeing it all play out. I look forward to the next Renegade book!

Bottom Line: If you loved Reckless…you will love this one too! I would say that you don’t have to read Reckless to enjoy this book, but why would you want to skip it?!

All is Calm, All is Bright by  Colleen Coble

These are two novellas in one book. I didn’t realize that when I requested it, my fault. Apparently, All is Calm is from the Lonestar series and All is Bright connects to the Hope Beach series. I haven’t read either of these series but I still enjoyed these two novellas. You have a little mystery, a little love, and a Christmas theme. Let’s be honest, my request was solely based on Christmas!! I saw the cover and said YES!!!! and knew nothing about the books. While it wasn’t what I suspected, the stories are pretty juicy for being short. At times I felt they were both a little rushed, but aren’t all novellas?

The first novella story has just a teeny bit of Christian faith thrown in, but nothing offensive, annoying or preachy. It is a murder mystery. The second novella is about a girl that is stalked and driven off a road. They try to dig up things from her past to figure out who is stalking her. Both were very quick reads once you got in to them.

Bottom Line: I would suggest these novellas if you have read either series or enjoy this author. If you are looking for a quick and interesting read, I would check these out! I really enjoyed both stories and the style of writing.

Other books I have read this month:

The Scam by Janet Evanovich

Apartment Therapy Complete + Happy Home

Books that I didn’t finish:

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee – This is one of three audio book that my library has. Sad that there are only three, right? Anyways. I had high hopes once I learned that Reese Witherspoon was the one doing the reading. I tried. I tried for three days to get in to this and I just couldn’t.

Currently I am consuming The Husband’s Secret via Audible. I really wanted to have it completed for this link up, but that didn’t happen. It will be on the next one! Have you read anything good lately?

Uncategorized, weekend shenanigans

Weekend Shenanigans

Oh, hey there Monday. You sure did come quick!!! Time for Weekend Shenanigans!!!

Things that happened this weekend:

I cleaned the floors, vacuumed, cleaned the kitchen and dusted the whole house.

We watched Georgia lose to Tennessee.

We watched Alabama suck ass for nearly 3 quarters before finally deciding to show up to play some football and take over the Arkansas game.

I cooked Cheesy Jalapeno Pinwheels and Pastry Pizza Wraps.

Three loads of laundry were washed, folded/ironed and put away.

I caved and bought a bag of fall peanut M&M’s and proceeded to eat half of it in a matter of hours. Clearly demonstrating no self control.

We started three new TV shows…

quantico-abc

Quantico – This show is about a class of FBI trainees and there time at Quantico. The show flashes from the present to the past, as one of the students becomes a suspect in a bombing and there are flashbacks to how this came about.

Should you watch it – While this might be my least favorite of the three we started, I am really enjoying it. I like it better than Chris I think.

Limitless

Limitless – Based on the movie, this show is about a guy that takes the drug NZT and joins in with the FBI to see why his body does not have the same horrible side effects as others who have taken it. Little does the FBI know, he is working with someone to get shots and that is why it works for him.

Should you watch it – While it can be a little cheesy at times, I really like this. I would say absolutely watch it if you have seen the movie. I haven’t seen the movie and I still enjoy it, so the movie isn’t a requirement. Bradley Cooper stars in the first episode to pass the torch to the TV show, so there is that.

blindspot

Blind Spot– A girl wakes up in a bag in Time Square completely naked and covered in tattoos with no memory of who she is or what happened to her. There is a tattoo of an FBI agent’s name on her back and she is sent to him. They start following clues from her tattoos to find out who she is and what happened to her.

Should you watch it – Absolutely!!! This is by far my favorite of the three and I can’t wait for the rest of the episodes!!!

Things that didn’t happen this weekend:

The back yard didn’t get cut.

I didn’t finish the book I was planning on having done for tomorrow’s link up.

No organizing of my clothes took place.

No healthy eating was had.

No day hit even 10,000 steps on the ol’ Fitbit.

How I feel about today…

Linking up with Biana. I hope everyone has a great week!!!

friday favorites

Friday Favorites

Oh, hey Friday!!!! Notice a little color change going on up top? Don’t adjust your screens. I have been playing around with my design. I have that itch to change something and thought the easier thing is accent color. Anywho, it is time for Friday Favorites!!!

Favorite Song: We were watching some old reruns of HIMYM and the episode with the flashback of Marshall came on…

When was the last time you heard Informer by Snow?? It is still full of awesome.

Favorite Beauty: I received a bottle of YSL Black Opium from Influenster and I am in love!!! Besides the fact that the packaging is just gorgeous, I think that this scent is really appropriate for fall! It is sensual, with scents of sandalwood, coffee, white flowers and vanilla. It isn’t overpowering so you can wear it for work or a night out. My only complaint is that I feel that it fades towards the end of the day. Though to be honest, don’t most fragrances? I will be happily displaying this beautiful bottle in my bedroom. Love, love, love!

Favorite Recipe: This Spicy Cashew Chicken looks amazing, right???

Copycat Spicy Cashew Chicken | The Chunky Chef | This cashew chicken is deliciously spicy and savory, and tastes almost exactly like The Cheesecake Factory's recipe. You won't want takeout anymore!:

Favorite Lust: I need new pants, bad! I am thinking maybe these. Or these. And Amanda said great things about these. What is your go to brand?

Favorite Event: Laura and I went to the 10th Anniversary Party at Swoozies here in Birmingham on Wednesday night. We were in the top 25 to RSVP so we got swag bags!!! I love the gold color and the fact that there are elephants on it!!! I will say that I really thought there would be fun stuff inside it, but it was empty. Boo!

Swoozie Swag Bag

While we were there I grabbed a Corkcicle bottle. Have you seen these?

It says that they keep your drink cold for 25 hours or hot for 12 hours. They are BPA free and do not sweat. I am in love!!! I poured my water with some ice at 7:15am and when I pulled it out for lunch at 12:20pm it was freezing cold still!!! YES!!!! Plus it is so pretty 🙂 I found myself drinking twice the amount of water I usually do throughout the day because I like my water cold, not room temp. This bottle is a huge win.

Favorite Links:

–Michael had a great post about Stylebook and how she organized her closet and got rid of things she doesn’t love. This is something that I have been working on this year. She did such a great job on her post that it made me purchase the app!!! You can ask Chris, I never buy apps. It was that good.

–I sent this article to Chris for goals of our next home!

–Learn what your favorite dog breed says about you.

Obviously I am a huge Pug fan since Gracie is a Puggle, it says:

It’s been said that you have to have a sense of humor to have a pug, and pug lovers definitely do. People who love pugs enjoy laughing and are overall very cheery, positive people. They’re not always the most sporty (or coordinated), but that’s okay. They adore being pampered and taken care of, just like their furry counterparts. Pug lovers are open-minded and tend to be on the artistic side.

I do love to laugh and keep an open mind!!!

Confessions

–I had the best freaking time with my nephew at the pumpkin patch on Monday. Cooper and his little classmates are just so darn cute, and they were so excited about everything! #kindergartenersarecute

–I really wanted to bring home Brody the pig. We bonded. He totally begged me for pets and his little nose was going a mile a minute. #petnapping

–Turkeys scare the shit out of me….

That turkey was an ass and got his feathers in a ruffle when we walked up to him. I’ll see you on a platter for Thanksgiving you evil little bird. Just don’t talk to me about bacon, ok? #gobblegobblegobble

–I thought it was pretty funny to watch a lot of the little girls chasing after Cooper. Apparently, he is a real ladies man. This doesn’t surprise me at all, as he has had game since he was in diapers and I can see that my sister is going to have trouble on her hands big time with this one. #ladiesman

–I had my first PSL of the season last week. I didn’t love it. There. I said it. I know that they put “real pumpkin” in it or whatever this year. Perhaps I like the fake shit better? Or perhaps they just aren’t as good to me as they once were. RIP PSL memories. I shall stick to the Salted Caramel Mocha from now on. #needcaffeine #notsuchabasicbitch

–I have worn dresses all summer long. I did not put pants on a single time. Last week I pulled all my pants out to start wearing. They are all too big. This is normally a good problem, right?? Until you realize that you have to buy all new ones.  I think my actual body shape has changed. I am literally running my ass off. #baggyjeans

–Which brings me to the fact that I hate jeans shopping. Hate. Hate. Hate. Loathe. #firstworldproblems

book review, books

Apartment Therapy Complete + Happy Home

I am not going to lie, I absolutely judge a book by it’s cover. When I saw the Apartment Therapy Complete and Happy Home cover I thought….I want to live in that living room!!!

This book is full of beautiful home decor pictures that will inspire great ideas for your own home! The book is broken down in to three main parts: Setting Up Your Home, Living in Your Home and Maintaining Your Home.  It helps you chose the right type of house, and different styles of decor to fit your lifestyle and tastes. Don’t let the title fool you though. This isn’t so much about an apartment as it is a house. But the concepts can apply to both.

There are sections of the book that break down how to have a good flow through the home, what the appropriate type and size light fixture is for a bed side table, even framing unexpected pieces like sports equipment or functional items to create a differnent vibe and added storage space!

Not all of the design styles are my taste, but it provides great ideas to apply to things that I do like. It talks about what to do with small rooms to make them look larger, how to chose paint and floor finishes, etc. Plus, there is an outdoor section! Learn how to have a garden with minimum acerage, set up your deck to entertain  and maximize your small patio space.

One of my favorite sections of the book is in the back. There are useful guides with home repair tips and other great information. When you first purchase your home, you are just so excited and overwhelmed with the newness of it all that you’re not quite thinking what it is going to take to maintain it!!! And the best part? There is a yearly guide broken down by months to keep you on track with keeping your house clean, healthy, and happy! Starting January 1, 2016, I plan on writing down each month’s goals in my planner and see how the schedule works for me. I think I am going to love it!

You can read more about the author here and read more about the book here.
