baby, birth story

The Birth Story

I wanted to make sure I got this birth story typed up as quickly as I could, I don’t want to forget any details of the most important event of our lives! Saturday, December 3, 2016 started out like any other normal day. I was a day past my due date and feeling good. Well, as good as one can feel when they are 40 weeks and 1 day pregnant and ready to evict the baby! It was funny because on her due date, I drove Chris to the doctor because he caught a nasty bug at work and did some grocery shopping. I remember people stopping to say “Oh wow you look like you are about to pop, when are you due.” And my response was a smile with “today.” They always looked immediately nervous, like my water was going to bust all over their floor. Haha! I knew she wasn’t coming out on her due date. I woke up knowing I would be pregnant for at least another day.

Anyways, back to Saturday, December 3. The day started like a normal Saturday. I felt pretty tired, but I got up and did some things around the house. I felt a few contractions but that was the new normal for me each morning and I didn’t think much about it. Around noon, I started to notice the contractions were still there and starting to come about every 12-15 minutes apart. I told no one. I wasn’t going to jinx this! Right before the SEC Championship started, I mentioned to Chris that I had been having contractions the last few hours and I was going to try and hold out the entire game, but that this might be the real deal.

The game went on and my contractions started getting really strong and painful. and closer together!!! When forth quarter started, I got up and packed the last minute items in our hospital bag and really started tracking the time between each contraction. They were anywhere from 3 and a half to five minute apart and it had been about an hour and a half of that. Time to call the doctor!!!

I called the after hours line and told them what was going on. They told me that my doctor was actually the one on call (Yay!!!!) and that she would be calling me shortly. I answered the phone to “OMG are we going to have a baby tonight?!?! ” My doctor was just as excited as I was! She told me that she would meet me at the hospital!

We packed up the car and I handed Chris the keys. It was his first time driving my car and I am pretty sure he never went over 70 MPH the entire way. He called his sister and his parents, and I had texted my sister a few hours ago to let her in on my contractions but texted her to let her know we were in fact in route to the hospital! I then texted my mom and dad and let them know too, but said that I would text them all when I was getting admitted. I didn’t want them all driving an hour down there for a false alarm.

When we got to the hospital, we were taken back to triage right away and I signed what felt like an encyclopedia of paper work and got checked. You guys…I was only 1 cm dilated. What?!?! They hooked me up to the fetal heart monitor and the contraction monitor and told me to hang out for a few hours there and see if I progress any. I was so scared they were going to send me home and I didn’t want to go all the way back there!!!

After a few very painful hours, they came back to check me and I still hadn’t progressed any but they could see how intense and quickly my contractions were coming so they called my doctor who said to go ahead and admit me.

Chris’s parents and sister had gotten to the hospital shortly after us and had been out in the waiting room the entire time, so I was just glad to get a room so they could come back with us too. My family all arrived shortly after we were admitted.

Around midnight (I think maybe after??) my doctor decided that my body had enough of the pain and went ahead and ordered my epidural. Why anyone wants a natural birth without one is beyond me. I wasn’t trying to be a hero, there is modern medicine for a reason and I was in so much pain my entire body was shaking. I was so thankful for the magical relief!!!

At that point, they let our family come back in to say goodnight to me, they wanted Chris and I to get some rest. My sister, mom, dad and MIL stayed in the waiting room the entire night and never left the hospital. I remember when the nurses came in to check on me every 20 minutes or so that I would wake up feeling super guilty that they were out there just waiting. My doctor had come in at one point and broke my water and started me on pitocin.

While the pitocin was starting to work to progress me along quicker, it was also causing Zoe’s heartbeat to drop during each contraction.

Around this time, my doctor was going off duty and another doctor was coming on. I knew I was still in good hands, so I was ok with that. I loved the other doctor too and was thankful it was him if it couldn’t be mine.

When the new doctor came on, he decided to perform an amnioinfusion, which pumps fluids back in to me because he felt that since my water broke, there was pressure being put on the umbilical cord somewhere or it was wrapped around her neck…and he wanted to see if that would help. This was sometime between 5-7am.

Stay tuned for part two…

weekend shenanigans

Weekend Shenanigans

I have always wondered what it would feel like to have a few weekends without having to worry about going back to work on Monday. Since I am off for the next month, I have experienced two so far and I have decided that weekends go by just as quickly when you are not working. I thought for sure that it wouldn’t feel different than a week day but it does!

This weekend we got little Z out and about twice! Her first outing? Sam’s Club, Mexican for lunch and a disappointing trip to Bargain Hunt happened on Friday.

img_1104

It is so crazy going from being a carefree couple of two, to a family of three with a newborn. Before when we wanted to go somewhere, we just left. No big deal. Now? I make sure to feed and change Z and then pack her diaper bag with anything that we might need the few hours while we are out. Which is literally everything in her room! We need diapers and wipes and a change of clothes and some bottles and pacifier and a blanket and a burp cloth and the list goes on and on! It takes some preparing before you are just out the door!

Saturday morning was rough. We woke up to our septic tank backing up again, to someone being two hours late to meet us. We finally got out in the afternoon and headed to run some errands in the busiest area in Birmingham. Little Miss slept the entire time once again. Clearly our outings are quite exhausting for her! I feel like I got us out the door much faster Saturday!

Sunday looked a lot like this….

img_1102

It is insanity how much space a tiny human takes up with their gear. Our living room has been taken over with the pack and play, rock and play and other items! I wouldn’t have it any other way though. Just as long as I still have half a view of our Christmas tree and TV, then I am good!

And because they are too good to not share…

Passing out immediately after eating never felt so good, apparently.

This was a 4am stare down. She clearly won…

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I have gifts to wrap, cards to receive and get addressed and back out the same day, and some chili to cook! Happy week before Christmas!!!

Friday Favorites

I am going to start easing my way back to normal with a Friday Favorites post!! I cant believe that this is the last weekend before Christmas. Like, what?!?! It doesn’t even feel like Christmas to me right now because of the whirlwind of the last few weeks for me. I am hoping that I can get some Christmas spirit in this weekend because it is my favorite holiday and I want to soak it up. We are thinking about venturing out for our first baby outing to do some shopping this weekend. I would also like to squeeze in a Christmas movie or two. What are you plans?

Favorite Moments:

–So many! Becoming a mom has been the most amazing experience. While the late night cluster feedings are rough with the lack of sleep, there is something so special about the bonding time I am getting with Zoe. She is the sweetest little girl!!

img_0845

–I received some serious love in the mail the week before I delivered. Kristen sent Zoe an adorable outfit and the best burp clothes ever!! Seriously, these things are sitting all over my house and sure do come in handy.

img_0859

Emily sent me some super cute little bootie socks that are literally the only ones that stay on Zoe’s tiny feet and a few other goodies for Zoe and a few things for me too!!! So sweet and thoughtful and very much appreciated.

–My sister and MIL have been amazing the last two weeks. My sister has come over several times to just let me shower or pump or nap for a few hours. She has brought food, cleaned my house, and been an amazing support system. My MIL has come up to our house every day the first week we were home and several times this week too. She has brought more bottles and clothes that actually fit. (Newborn sized items were too big!) She has been a great support these last few weeks as we adjust too and I am so thankful for both of them.

Favorite Lust: I really want to get my office area right before I start back to work. I am thinking something simple and chic would do. I love this gray washed desk, and the price isn’t too bad!

I saw a chair similar to this at TJ Maxx for less than $100. I doubt it is still there, you know…Marshall’s Law and all..but I would love to find something similar.

Favorite Funnies:

book review, books

Books Lately

This month is extra special because we have two book link up days with Jana and Steph!!! Today I am sharing the books I read over the last month, and at the end of the month I will be sharing my top picks for 2016! Let’s jump right in, shall we?

Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler

Shotgun Lovesongs

I know everyone read this book last year, I get behind. Sorry! I really enjoyed this book. I will say, I am very glad I did this on audiobook because the story is being told from several characters points of view and it was nice to hear different voices for each chapter. I just loved getting to know these characters, their little town in Wisconsin and a little of the drama and growth between them. Nothing major or life changing about this book; just a really good, solid read.

Bottom Line: If you are looking for characters to get lost in and want to feel part of a small town…read it!

Rating: 4/5

Trophy Wife by Noelle Adams

Trophy Wife

This was a cute and quick read. This was about a Trophy Wife who gets divorced and moves to a small town and tries to make it on her own and figure out who she is and what she wants. She meets a local man and is conflicted on whether to date him or not because she doesn’t want to become a dependent trophy wife again. I appreciated her struggles to figure out who she was, and while the story was a little predictable at times, it was still a cute read.

Bottom Line: If you are looking for a cute love story, give it a try.

Rating:3/5

**I received a copy of Trophy Wife from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are of my own.**

The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney

The Nest

This book was really hyped up but to be honest…..it fell a flat for me. There were times I was literally bored and wondering should I just quit. Then other times I was wondering what was happening with the characters and wanted to keep going. And there are so many characters. Not only do you have the Plum siblings, but you also get these side characters you have to keep up with too. Some of them were completely pointless.

Sadly, I didn’t get to finish the before my time was up with it at the library. I was 80% done!!! Anyone want to tell me what happened at the end? Pretty please!?

Bottom Line: I could really take or leave this book, because I’m not waiting on the list for three more months to finish it.

Zoe Jane

She’s here!!! If you stalked my social media, you would see that Zoe Jane made her arrival at 10:20 am on December 4th! She is 7 lbs, 20 inches and perfect. I fully intend on getting my birth story up sooner than later so I don’t forget all the details. Spoiler alert, we had to leave for the hospital during the 4th quarter of the SEC Championship.

To solve the mystery song on my life playlist- Zoe Jane by Staind. Grab a tissue, you are going to need it.

So how her name came about? I had about 5 or 6 first names that I really liked. We knew that the middle name would be Jane, it is a family name for of Chris’s family. So many names sound great with Jane so that was the easy part. We kept going over my list and Chris would always say, well I like that name…but I really love Zoe. I was chatting with my ahole bros group one day about names and ran Zoe Jane across them and Kristen said “Oh, like the song?!?!”  I was like “ummm what song.” Kristen said “Zoe Jane by Staind.”

For some reason I thought that Chris didn’t like Staind. I thought he told me they sounded whiny in their music or something so I thought playing the song for him might sway him to one of my names. WRONG!!! The instant the beat dropped and those first words came across, Chris’s smile grew three sizes like the Grinches heart. And then the chorus came about and I am pretty sure I saw tears in his eyes. Chris never cries. And so it was, I couldn’t say no. Obviously if it was a girl, her name had to be Zoe Jane. Chris literally said, “I really wanted a boy, but now that we have picked out Zoe Jane I will be really excited if it is a girl.” We never did settle on a boy name, clearly we knew it was a girl all along.

Give me a few days to learn how to do anything else other than hold a baby, feed the baby, do laundry and change diapers. Like seriously, when does anyone get anything else done? And someone please tell me when you actually get sleep?!?!  I forgot to eat two meals my first day home. I have never forgotten a meal in my life.

I appreciate all the love from you all in comments on Instagram and the texts checking in on me. In the mean time, let me dump some photos on you! That is why you are really here anyways, right?

You guys, this little girl is already so sweet and incredible. She has my whole heart and I never knew a love like I have for her. I literally spend half my days just staring in to these beautiful blue eyes of hers and wondering how in the heck I am so blessed to be her mommy.
