Books Lately

It’s book day! Crazy how fast that comes every month, right?! For June, my goal was to get through as many books on my shelf in Netgalley as I possibly could. You know, so I can request more and keep up my ration. Ha! But also to follow along with Dani and Erin‘s Read My Books challenge. Full disclosure, One True Loves was the only book that I did not have prior to this month, the rest I pulled from my Netgalley shelf from requests that were approved before June. A few of them may have been archived for more than a month….oops. Better late that never. Obviously I am also linking up with the queen(s) of books, Steph and Jana!

Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler

Vinegar Girl

This book is a retelling of Taming of the Shrew. One of my favorite movies, 10 Things I Hate About You is also a retelling of Taming of the Shrew. I found myself thinking of those characters a little as I read this novel. The book is short, less than 250 pages and I felt like Anne Tyler did a good job at retelling the famous comedy. The writing itself was great and if I didn’t know it was a retelling, I would have compared it to Taming of the Shrew.

Had this story been just a modern day tale, there are a few things that would have irked me about how Kate was just supposed to submit to her father and marry Pyotr. The way he is always expecting Kate to take care of him like its her life duty and such. But I appreciate all her snark and the contrast between her and her sister Bunny.

Bottom Line: If you are looking for a good retelling of Taming of the Shrew, this is it. It is a quick, summer read.

One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid

One True Loves

I knew that when I saw this on Kristen’s list last  month. it would be right up my alley. I really enjoyed this book. What would you do if your husband was thought to be dead and you had moved on with someone else…..only to realize that he never died. I really liked the characters in this book, both guys were likable as was Emma. This was a beautifully told love story and I had my mind made up about half way through where I wanted Emma to end up in the end. And I loved loved loved the ending.

Bottom Line: Read it! I adored this book.

That Darkness by Lisa Black

26025628

This book was just ok for me. There was a lot of action and an interesting story line, but it didn’t pick up as much as I would have liked until I was 80% in to the book.  While I appreciate all the crime scene analysis and details that make up the story, it was sort of boring at the same time. Perhaps I just wasn’t in the mood for this type of book when I read it? The book did make me question whether you should do the right thing or the legal thing. How I would feel if the justice system failed me. And my thoughts on vigilantes.

Bottom Line: If you are in to crime books, this would be a good option for you. I really did like the story line and concept of the book.

Curious Minds by Janet Evanovich and Phoef Sutton

Curious Minds (Knight and Moon, #1)

I am a huge Janet Evanovich fan, I just love her Stephanie Plum series. I also recently read one of the books from her Fox and O’Hare series a few months back and it was great too. Curious Minds is (hopefully) a new series with Janet Evanovich pairing with Phoef Sutton. I really enjoyed this book!!! I liked Riley, the lead female character. She is sort of quirky like Stephanie Plum, but maybe put together a little more. And then there is Emmerson, the eccentric millionaire that grabbed my heart. These two made quite the team while trying to solve the mystery of fake gold in the Federal Reserve. I literally read this book in one day, that is how much I enjoyed it. I just flowed for me and I wanted to find out what was going to happen next!

Bottom Line: If you like the Stephanie Plum series or cozy mysteries in general, then this book is for you.

First Comes Love by Emily Giffin

First Comes Love

I was a little worried, as Giffin’s last book was pretty terrible, I knew this would have to be better. The chapters rotate between Josie and Meredith’s POV and I liked that. The book takes place in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. I lived in that area for several years and I loved hearing all the places I recognize like the OK Cafe, Tin Lizzy’s, Five Paces etc. I recognize all the street names and can picture everything as it is being described.

I liked that the characters of this book were relatable. You have one sister who seems to have the perfect life with the husband, the kid, the fancy career, etc and then you have the sister that is a little bit of a mess who appears carefree and selfish. But things aren’t as they seem. I liked that the characters weren’t perfect and it was a real sibling relationship.

Bottom Line: I really enjoyed this book. It was a great read and I really felt like I got to know the characters.

Wanting it All by Chrisi Barth

Wanting It All (Naked Men #2)

This is the second book in the Naked Men series. I reviewed the first book a few months ago. The Naked Men is actually a blog and podcast that a few best guy friends share where they are completely candid and uncensored about their real thoughts on topics. This book focuses on Knox, the incredibly successful and smart bachelor who typically goes through women like a buffet until he meets Madison. Madison is a strong and compassionate girl who has a one track mind to marriage. She is also in DC to find her long lost brother, none other than Knox’s best friend Logan. This was quite an interesting read watching Knox transform and see Madison adjust to big city living.

Bottom Line: If you are looking for a cute love story, this is it.

Beach and Weekend Shenanigans

Whale Whale Whale look who showed up today!

Sometimes when you go to the beach for a week, you need to take a vacation from everything in life. And that is just what I did. I felt all relaxed and refreshed, and then I had to go back to work Friday and it all got washed away like it never even happened. Funny how reality is, isn’t it? Such is the adult life.

We seriously had a fabulous time at the beach though, the longest stretch that we have stayed. I even came back a few shades darker! Let’s just say, we ate most meals in and didn’t leave our condo grounds because why would we? We have access to the beach and pools so what more could you ask for? We did go out to eat for lunch when we got there. We hit up Mikee’s. one of our favorites!

Mikee's

We also checked out Sassy Bass one evening for dinner. This place is super close to our condo and a real gem. One of my favorite things about beach restaurants? Crab claws and hush puppies!!!

Sassy Bass

Because I am five, there were plenty of jokes about the “happy endings” dessert menu.

We stopped and walked around downtown Foley on our way in to check out the video game store that we always hit up. How cute is this town?

Downtown Foley

It was hot as fuck basically everyday except the last one, which was a wonderful overcast. It is sad when you think 88 degrees is cool, right?? Regardless, it was a wonderful trip. I will let the pictures do the talking!

The last nights sunset was my favorite!!!

My SIL and I got away for a few hours to hit up the Foley outlets. Check out this gorgeous Michael Kors clutch I grabbed on major sale!!! I had a hard time choosing between the pink and blue and my SIL and the sales girl talked me in to blue. I am glad they did.

We took the new Explorer with us and my oh my what room we had!!! I cant get over how big the back is when the third row seats are down. So much room for activities! Or stuff for activities. Whatever.

We stopped to grab Mac from boarding on our way home. Once he got in the car with us and realized he was in fact going home he got ridiculously excited. Clearly we were missed! The little guy wouldn’t leave our side. I think someone had a little separation anxiety. He got his summer buzz cut, how cute is he??? He looks like a completely different dog when he gets buzzed.

Mac

And that was our trip!!! This past weekend we played catch up and cleaned the house, did about 500 loads of laundry, started shopping for new furniture for our living room, finished watching House of Cards and started Breaking Bad and enjoyed a delicious lunch out at Billy’s in Liberty Park.

I am back to regular blogging this week and just in time for the book link up tomorrow! I have a lot of good ones to share with you from this past month so get your TBR list ready!

Linking up with Biana.

confessions

Vacation Confessions

It’s the first Wednesday of the month, and I am late to my own link up! How is that for a confession? If you missed last month’s announcement, the Confessions Linkup is now a monthly thing that will occur the first Wednesday of the month.

–I don’t make a big deal about packing. I just pick out some outfits and other things I need and do it. I can be packed for an entire week in 30 minutes or less with no stress. This blows some people’s minds.

–No matter how much sunscreen I wear, I still manage to get sunburn somewhere. Darn that Irish skin!

–Now that I am old, even on vacation I am up by 630 am and in bed by 1030 pm at the latest. But usually in bed before 10 pm.

–I never tire of hearing the ocean crashing into the shore or lose the amazement of it’s beauty.

–I only last sitting out in the sun for 15-20 minutes before my ass hops in the pool. I hate being hot.

–Having sand in my hair or on my body might be my least favorite feeling ever.

–No beach trip is complete without sandwiches and Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos. (You know…the purple bag.)

–I have been to Destin, Panama City and a few places on the Atlanta Coast….but Gulf Shores Alabama is my favorite place to visit. It is more chill and relaxed. There are some seriously amazing restaurants, the beaches aren’t over crowded and it is just beautiful.

Sh!t Chris Says

Sh!t Chris Says

It is time for another installment of SHIT CHRIS SAYS!!!!

Sh!t Chris Says

Me: Did you see my post today? It was another Shit Chris Says.

Chris: Yeah, I was kind of disappointed. I have said way better shit over the last few months and your post should have been much longer.

Me: Ummmm I can’t post most of that shit on the internet!!! Most of the time my response to your shenanigans is “What is wrong with you!?!?!?!” My internet friends would question my life choices.

Mac is barking incessantly outside and Chris pauses the TV show we are watching and says, “Can you bring Adolf Barkler inside please?!?!?!”

A Just Fab shoe commercial comes on and Chris’s response to a pair of shoes goes a little something like this….”Those are ho-ho-rrendous.”

We decide to start watching Season 2 of Bloodline. The recap from the first season is on.

Chris: Basically we didn’t need to watch that entire first season, we could have gotten everything we needed to know in that recap. Literally nothing else happened.

Me: So do you not want to watch the second season?

Chris: Oh no, we are going to watch it. And get disappointed wasting 12 hours of our lives.

Andrea did a fun little how well do you know the mr post awhile back and when I was reading her post, I started answering the questions for Chris in my head. Thought I would share it with you all and I will report back with how many I got right!

1.  He’s sitting in front of the TV, what is on? We have shows that we watch together, but when I come home from work he is usually watching reruns of The League, Rules of Engagement, Two and a Half Men or football in the fall.

2.  You’re out to eat; what kind of dressing does he get on his salad? Ranch

3.  What’s one food he doesn’t like? Olives

4.  You go out to eat and have a drink; what does he order? Either an IPA ,  scotch ale or Kentucky bourbon beer, or some type of bourbon and coke.

5.  Where did he go to high school? I know the answer to this question but I am not going to share it for all the internet to see. Gotta respect his privacy.

6.  What is his nickname for you? We don’t really have nicknames for each other. Sometimes we refer to each other as baby, but usually that is in text or me babying him when he doesn’t feel good.

7.  If he was to collect anything, what would it be? Together we collect video games and have a pretty dope collection!!! He also has a collection of Amiibos and random computer things.

8.  What would he eat every day if he could? Hmmmm his favorite foods are lasagna, chicken Parmesan, and pork medallions. Though I don’t know that he would want them every day!

9.  What is his favorite cereal? I have never seen him eat cereal the entire time I have known him. He is  more of a bacon, sausage, eggs and biscuits kind of guy.

10. What would he never wear? Probably an Auburn shirt! Gross.

11. What is his favorite sports team? Alabama ROLL TIDE!

12. Who did he vote for? Not Obama!!!

13. Who is his best friend? I would like to say me.. But he would probably say Jay or John. Or Mac, our dog. LOL!

14. What do you do that bothers him? He doesn’t like to hear food crunching sounds so anything crunchy annoys the shit out of  him. No matter how politely I chew. Also, my indecisiveness drives him batty. Sorry!

15. What is his heritage? Hmmm Irish? Some other stuff too.

16. You bake him a cake for his birthday; what kind of cake? Cookie Cake! But I get that from the American Cookie Company.

17. Did he play sports in high school? No, he was a gamer. He won lots of awards with that!! I think he played basketball a little bit in middle school though?

18. What could he spend hours doing? Messing around on the computer, listening to music and TV binging.

 19. How does he make you feel special? He is always pushing and encouraging me to try to be better as far as life goals go. He is also very thoughtful when it comes to birthday and Christmas cards and presents.

20. What is one unique talent he has? I have literally witnessed him in a random break dancing competition in a club in Atlanta one night when we were out and it was pretty epic! He is also a fabulous DJ, even if he has hung up his headphones professionally.

weekend shenanigans

Weekend Shenanigans

Friday started out on a sad note. I really appreciate all of your support and sweet comments on my Friday post. In order to keep myself distracted I went to work on Friday even though I contemplated taking a day. At least I was productive.

I also finally got to try Hattie B’s with a few co-workers for lunch. That place has had a line out the door every since they opened a few weeks ago and we decided to head down there and see whats what. I have to say, it is probably the best fried chicken I have had. There are a few levels of hot: southern, mild, medium, hot and damn hot. I got mild because I ain’t no fool. I watched my coworker turn lobster red and sweat with his damn hot chicken. Silly boys! My sides consisted of pimento mac n cheese and fries. Oh, and I of course couldn’t resist ordering the banana pudding. Best. Pudding. Ever.

Hattie B's

Saturday my mom and I met up super early for a day of shopping! We started out with breakfast at Chick Fila. Sometimes you just cant beat chicken minis.

chick fila

We spent the rest of the day shopping all around Trussville and ended at the outlets. We had so much fun, as we always do. She gave me the sweetest little surprise too 🙂

Sunday was a day of meal planning, grocery shopping, laundry, and House of Cards consuming! I also read an entire book (Curious Minds by Janet Evanovich)!!! I can’t remember the last time I have done that. Of course I will have all the book details for you on book day!

Also spent a lot of time with this little dude who has been a little more clingy than usual. Such a sweet, strong boy.

Mac Snuggles

And just like that it is back to reality this week! I have a lunch date planned with Laura today, so at least I am starting Monday out on a happy note. She has been so sweet to check in on me a few time since she found out about Gracie on Thursday. Couldn’t ask for a better friend!

I will probably be sporadic and take a few days off from blogging this week and next, like I am sure many of you will. Don’t forget the next confession link up will be Wednesday, July 6th!

Linking up with Biana. Have a great week!
