Weekend Shenanigans – Spending Money and Eating Candy

Happy Halloween! Do kids in your area trick or treat on Halloween or are the parents lame and they do it on Saturdays? I’m sorry, but when I was a kid we did Halloween on Halloween. And I lived in Pittsburgh and it got dark early and some years it even snowed and we were still out there walking from house to house…not being driven in a car on a Saturday at 5pm. People have gotten so lame! I see I am going off on a rant and I am going to stop myself. It’s time for some weekend shenanigans!

Laura and I kicked off Friday with a lunch date at Cocina Superior for Mexican. It has been months since I have had a good enchilada and chips and salsa. This meal was so delicious and what better company than your bestie, am I right? Speaking of besties….she stopped by my office with her adorable T-Rex after his Halloween parade and basically made my afternoon. Kid dinosaurs are the cutest. Just saying.

Friday evening I came home and started washing allllll the baby clothes!!! And then I started hanging them in the closet the way I have my closet organized, by type of top then by color. Well hers is also organized by size too. It was so much fun going through everything again and trying to picture her in them.

Saturday morning I put together the crib mobile and Chris put together the chair. We did a few other nursery related things and then headed out in search of the rest of the have to have now baby items. But first, lunch! We went to Twin Peaks for the first time in Hoover and I have to say I was very impressed with how nice it was inside and how amazing the food was. Taco Mac was one of my favorite Atlanta hang outs and we don’t have one here. I was obsessed with their boneless wings and I think I finally found my favorite Birmingham boneless wings!!! And some amazing Chipotle Queso! Chris cheated on his diet just a tad to share that with me. It was the best!!!

Off to Buy Buy Baby! And Babies R Us. And three Bargain Hunts. We got a crib mattress, sheets, changing pad, changing pad cover, swing and a few other things that have slipped my mind. A successful shopping day for sure! I was freaking exhausted after all that walking around and we basically came home and crashed in front of the TV for the rest of the evening.

Sunday morning I got all the, bedding, sheets and changing pad cover washed and put on and a few other small things done. We headed to try a new restaurant in our area, Casa Fiesta. It was delicious and very well priced! My entire plate was $5.99. Mexican twice in one weekend? Yes, please!!!

We hit up Best Buy and Royal Furniture. We are in search for new furniture for our living room. We found a few things we liked but I think we are going to go out again next weekend to a few other places just to be sure it is what we want and the best deal. I did find a dresser for the nursery there for a very reasonable price though and I think we might be ordering it soon. That and an ottoman for the glider I am about to order will be the final pieces to go in! We picked up a cube shelf for her closet while we were at Target grocery shopping. Everything is finally starting to come together!

Sunday evening I moved the car seat and stroller to my car, made sure the swing was working properly and chilled the efffff out with this guy the rest of the night. I am pretty sure I was passed out in the chair at like 8pm. Party hard.

Friday Favorites

Oh, hey Friday! Yesterday morning I sat down to write a post and I just stared at a blank screen for a few minutes and decided not to force anything. Ever have a day like that? This weekend the plan is to get the car seat installed and buy all the things! Baby things that is. We have several important items to cross off our list still. I just love walking in to Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby!

Favorite Moments:

–Ordering a PSL on a Tuesday because it was Tuesday.

–Watching Mac explore and sniff everything in the nursery. He gets really excited when he walks in there and is so curious about everything. I hope he still feels the same way about her when she gets here.

–Girls night on Wednesday with Laura and Morgan. This might be the last one before baby, I don’t know?! It is so nice to just have some girl talk and delicious food. Melt had a pesto chicken sandwich special and we all ordered it. It was as delicious as it looks!

Favorite Recipe: This soup looks so perfect for fall! I think I need to make it for lunches soon.

Favorite Halloween Movie: Hocus Pocus, duh! I must watch it at least once every year! I hate scary movies and won’t watch them, so this is as scary as I get. Don’t laugh, those sisters can be mean!

Favorite Purchase: After much researching and looking, we ordered this gray and white wingback chair for the nursery and it came in this week! This was significantly less than the chairs at Babies r Us and Buy Buy Baby and looks just as nice.

PinkBlush was having a sale earlier this week for 25% off their tops. I found this gorgeous chiffon-lined knit that I can wear now and after baby. How cozy does this look?! The tracking says it wont come until next Friday. Boo! Not like I can wear it this week anyways with temps in the 80’s still. So gross.

Favorite Lust:I need to get a delivery robe and cute pair of pajamas to wear at the hospital. Does anyone have any recommendations? I looked at the ones on PinkBlush but I am sure there are other places out there that have great options. I am thinking something cotton, I get hot easily.

Maybe something like this for pajamas?

I like the idea of this robe and nursing nightgown combo too! Moms, let me know what you liked!

about me

Be Nadine

So I did it. I read The Happiness Project. I am going to be completely honest with you, I am not a self-help book kind of person. I think more often or not they are a bit hokey to me and I just don’t enjoy or take much from them. However, I have heard so many people say that The Happiness Project really did change their entire outlook on life or really gave them insight. I figured, why not? I am not going to go in to a whole review of the book or anything like that, but I do want to share a few things that I have really taken from the book that are already improving my life.

  1. Be Nadine – There are several references in the book where Gretchen tries something new or feels forced to do something and then she asks if this is something Gretchen would do or like. I am a people-pleaser. I know this about myself. Sometimes I will do something I don’t enjoy or act like I agree with someone just to please. Here’s the thing though, I am not being Nadine. Obviously there are compromises in life.  I am talking about forcing yourself to do things you don’t like because you feel like you should like it or other people like it so maybe if you keep trying you will too. Enough!!! Just be yourself. Be true to yourself and you will find that you are a lot happier!!! Now, I was never one to be fake. I am the same Nadine in any situation, just sometimes if I am in a more professional setting or around people I don’t know I might be a more conservative version of myself but I will never pretend to be someone I am not. This is more about not forcing myself to like or want to do things that aren’t me.
  2. Do It Now – I can procrastinate about things. It is one of my flaws. I work much better when I am under a time crunch. One of Gretchen’s things is if a task takes a minute or less to do….do it now. How simple is that?!?!? All of the one minute tasks can add up really quickly if you let them slide. I am putting this to practice in my life right now and it is making such a difference in my productivity!!!
  3. Letting go of things that don’t bring you joy. I know I read Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, but it really did nothing for me. Listening to Gretchen talk about her organizing was much more motivational and I related to it much more. Basically you want to let go of things that don’t bring you joy. She made the point that your closet will have more room and be much more organized with less items. And while you have less clothes, it will feel like you have more because you literally love everything you have. It just clicked and I let go of two huge trash bags full of items after reading this book.
  4. Identify the problem, find a solution.  This is another simple concept but makes so much sense. Gretchen’s example was that there were these tiny little trinket toys that her kids loved and wanted to keep. The problem? There was no where to store them and having them all over the house drove Gretchen nuts. The solution? She went to The Container Store and bought beautiful glass jars to store them in and she put them on a shelf so not only do they have a home, but they look cute with her decor. If there is something in your life, home or work that isn’t making you happy, identify what the problem is and come up with a solution. Chances are you can only benefit from this!
  5. Needing gold stars. There is a section of the book where Gretchen talks about her relationship with her husband. It really hit home for me because it reminds me of how I can be. Gretchen admitted that she needs “gold stars” of recognition for things that she is constantly doing around the house and she feels like maybe her husband takes it for granted. I personally take on most of our household cleaning. While most days I go about my business and think nothing of it, some days I will come home and just be irritated that there is a pile of laundry on Chris’s side of the bed or he left a stack of dishes in the sink that I need to put in the dishwasher. Gretchen says that instead of being irritated that you are now having to do that task…think more of the fact that you are doing it for yourself because you cant stand to have the mess or clutter. This way, you can’t be let down when you don’t receive recognition or appreciation for these tasks. Mind. Blown.

There is so much more that I took away from the book, like simply waking up and choosing to be happy. But these are the top five things that I have put into practice and am happier for it. Have you read The Happiness Project or ever worked on a happiness project of your own? Jenn has her own Happiness Project that you could read about too if you are looking for ideas! her talking about the book and her own project was actually the final push for me to read this for myself so thanks Jenn!

about me

One Year From Now…

One year from now I want to remember the nervous burst of excitement I had taking that first pregnancy test. I want to remember the immense amount of happiness that flooded me when I saw that faint pink second line. I want to remember that when I told Chris, Smashing Pumpkin’s 1979 was playing in the background. I want to remember hearing my sister squeal with shock and delight when I told her she was going to be an aunt. I want to remember that first time I heard that quick baby heart beat and felt her move in my belly. I want to remember how incredible it felt when we were told “it’s a girl!”

I want to remember all the conversations that Chris and I have had during this pregnancy about how excited we are, things that we want to do to prep for baby, the great debate over names. How many times we had to paint the nursery to get it right. And most importantly, I just want to remember how incredible it feels to have a life growing inside of me and how much I love someone I haven’t even met yet.

Let’s face it, pregnancy isn’t a cake walk, there are a lot of unpleasant moments. But in the end, you get a beautiful baby! That is pretty magical.

Weekend Shenanigans

Is it just me, or is October in a hurry to get on up out of here?!?! I swear the month just started and here we are in the last week already. Not that the days are going by fast though. Good grief, I thought 5pm was never going to come on Friday!

This weekend we…..

–Washed three loads of baby laundry! I washed every last sock, towel and blanket with Dreft and breathed that stuff in like a drug. I love that smell! Even Mac loves it because when I was fold blankets he kept trying to curl up in them. Next week will be the clothes! Thankfully we only got 2-3 newborn pieces and everything else was 0-3 months, 3 months, 3-6 months and up so I think we are safe to fit in everything.

–Watched Alabama beat Texas A&M! Roll Tide!!! Have you seen the Jermaine Funnymaine Johnson videos highlighting each week of the SEC as a Bama fan? Those videos crack me up!!! You can find them here. My favorite line this week? “Boy the Gus Bus got an oil change and new rotors.”

–Saturday night we hit up one of our favorite spots, Crazy Horse, for a late dinner. I ordered the Southern Burger and it was delicious!! It had fried green tomatoes on it. Southern and fabulous indeed. If you live in the Birmingham area, I promise you this place is worth the drive! Best steaks you will find in town too!

I got the latest Allure box in the mail. I am going to discontinue my membership. I am tired of getting same brands over and over again. I haven’t reviewed a box since being pregnant because I cant use all of the skin items I get right now but thinking about doing one last post on things I liked and didn’t like from the last several boxes.

Sunday was meal planning, grocery shopping and food prep as always. The rest of the day was spent catching up on reading, catching up on shows and a whole lot of this…
