Ham Salad

As most of you know, I am from the north, just outside of Pittsburgh. There are a few things up north that you just cant find around these parts, ham salad is one of them! (See also Snyder of Berlin Chips, Nibble with Gibble, real Italian food, a decent cheese steak, the list goes on.)

I remember when I was younger my mom would take my sister and I in to downtown Greensburg to this little deli store called Anderson’s. We would head straight to the back deli counter and order a pound of the ham salad. Then she would pick up fresh baked rolls and some Sweedish red fish and head to the register. Anderson’s had the BEST damn ham salad you ever did eat!

Each year after we moved and went home to visit, my grandma would go to Anderson’s and pick up ham salad for us to have while we were there. Sometimes we would even fill a cooler with some to take back home with us. Unfortunately, Anderson’s closed a few years ago and those days are no more. No one had ham salad like Anderson’s. Not no one. (Hangover style)

My sister scoured the internet and stumbled upon a recipe for ham salad out of Greensburg, PA. With a little hope and a whole lot of praying she chopped up some ham we had left over from Christmas and tried to recreate the masterpiece.

Folks, she did it!!!! And then she promptly met me half way between our houses to deliver to me the best lunch I have had in a long time.

I present to you Greensburg, PA style Ham Salad!!!!!

Ham Salad

What You Need

1/2 pound ham, coarsely chopped (real ham none of that deli full of water crap, you can get precooked at the store)

2-3 tablespoons of mayonnaise

3-4 tablespoons sweet relish

1-2 tablespoons drained diced pimentos

What You Do

Throw all the ingredients into a food processor and pulse until they’re chopped into a rough paste.

Spread that delicious ham salad onto a fresh bun and enjoy!!!! (I prefer Hawaiian Rolls)

I have heard that people also serve this over hard boiled eggs. You do what you want.

Weekend Shenanigans

Oh, hey there Monday! You sure did come quickly! This weekend was one of those where there were a lot of things I could have gone to, but chose just a few to not overwhelm myself. Let’s just jump right in, shall we?

Friday after work I met up with Chris at World of Beer. Monday Night Brewing was having an event there with three of their beers on tap and they were giving out free swag and such. I tweeted a picture from the MCB account and the guy from the brewery walked around trying to figure out where the picture had come from. He was really nice and gave us some swag.

When we were ready to go home, we ordered a pizza to go from Little Italy. It is new to the five points area and it is hands down the BEST pizza I have had in Birmingham! It is the only “real” pizza as far as I am concerned. Highly recommend you locals try it out, I am a pizza snob and don’t usually go throwing out words like the best!

Saturday – Chris was having some friends over Saturday afternoon/evening to play video games so I stayed in Saturday morning to get the cleaning done. We also headed to Target to pick up some snacks for them. While we were there I scored some great clearance items!

IMG_4540

I mean check out this calender!!!! I am going to hang it in my cube at work to bring a little color to the area. And dogs make me smile, especially sassy ones that say “If I were dating myself, I would give myself a cookie everyday and it would be adorable.” Um, yes!!

IMG_4541

Those KitchenAid towels were $1.78 from $5.99. Score! We then headed to Red Robbin for lunch. There aren’t many good places to choose from in Trussville, so when in doubt…grab a burger. I ordered the Blue Ribbon. I love blue cheese burgers!

When we got back home, we hung some more things up in the basement and then I got ready to leave for my dinner date with Laura and B.

We met up at Melt and I have been wanting to try their Greek salad since the first time I was there, and so I finally ordered it. Check out the presentation! The toppings along with some pasta salad come in a mason jar in the middle of the bowl. So cool. It was delicious!!!

We chatted for awhile and had a great time. After dinner I came home and started a new book, number 19 in the series and went to bed around 11 pm (like a bad-ass) while the boys were playing games in the basement.

Sunday we did our meal planning and grocery shopping. We also hung out with my sister in law for a little bit. In the afternoon we watched some movies on TV. We haven’t done that in forever! We watched part of the last Matrix, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, and American Pie Wedding. It was fabulous!

And like that, the weekend had come and gone and I didn’t get nearly as much done as I wanted to! You know, like fix my header, get some posts typed up, read more of my book, get some organizing done. Such is life, am I right? I hope everyone has a great week! Unlike most of you, I have to work today 🙁 The real estate world does not care about MLK day. Boo!

Friday Favorites

Favorite Song – There are not a lot of new songs out there that I like. But I am digging all the Calvin Harris releases! I shared Dollar Signs before I started doing Christmas songs. This is Open Wide. Maybe the lyrics are offensive to some women? Perverted song lyrics bother me none and this song has a catchy beat. Also I would like to point out that I am pretty sure if you say words like digging, you aren’t listening to that new hipster music anyways…

Favorite Top – Shortly after Christmas, my mom and I took the day off to hang out with each other and of course we went shopping! We were trying clothes on in the fitting room and there was a top she found that I just had to have. We went to see if there was another, and there wasn’t. But then we found this one which was really similar and I ended up like better on me.

IMG_4493Excuse the two day hair pony tail and no make up, it was a Sunday.

You can’t really tell in this photo, but those roses are rose gold!!! It is very similar to sweatshirt material and it has a super soft fleece lining on the inside. I could live in this top you guys, it is so comfy! I got it at Kohls. It is on sale for $24.99 right now!

Favorite Meal – Wednesday night I met up with Laura and Adrienne at Bottle and Bone. We have been wanting to try this place since before it even opened and just haven’t gotten around to it yet. When I heard that they do bacon flights, the want to try went to a need to go now!!!

IMG_4504

There were six different kinds of bacon and each one that I had was amazing. I ordered their burger as my main course. It didn’t come with any sides and was $10, a little pricey for just a burger….but the meat was of good quality and they make their own special in house sauce for it and house made pickles! It also had pickled onions on it. The bun was delicious as well.

IMG_4505

I have a feeling that we will end up back here for a bacon flight again! You can also purchase meats, beer and wine to take home! They do butchery classes, and beer and wine tasting events as well.

Favorite App – My mom got my hooked on crack! Trivia Crack that is! She was all, I need you to download this game and play with me. I was all we already have Ruzzle and Word With Friends, I dont want another word game. Um no, this is Trivial Pursuit you guys!!!! My sister and my mom constantly text me to “make my moves.” I have two games going with both of them and we cant stop.

Favorite Products

Every now and then you have to re-evaluate your arsenal of products to see what is working and what isn’t. And there is always that pesky seasonal change that can throw your skin for a loop.

Nioxin – Are there any other fine-haired girls out there? I feel like I am alone in blogland with all of your thick beautiful locks. When I went to see my hair girl last month, I expressed my frustrations of having no style to my hair, bumps on my head, and over all limp baby fine hair that is impossible to work with. She suggested I try Nioxin for all of my concerns. I read mixed reviews online but felt I had nothing to lose. Except more hair. So off to the store I went. I am loving this stuff! It has a minty smell, makes my scalp tingle a little, but really leaves my hair feeling clean and soft. So soft! It’s been about three weeks and I do feel I have a little more body to my hair. I will report back again in a month or two because it is supposed to help with growth as well. Time will tell!

Neutrogena Acne Wash – You guys, sometimes I feel like I am in high school all over again. Except not, because my skin was amazing back then. I guess that bitch Karma decided to show up after all. What’s a girl to do? I have been using this in the shower in the mornings and it has helped clear up some of the horrible break out I had going on. I can’t use it more than once a day, or it dries out my skin something awful.

The Body Shop Vitamin E Butter – Dry itchy skin is a bitch in the winter. Yes, even down south! This stuff is the only thing that saves me. I slather this all over in the morning after my shower and I am good to go all day. The scent is light and it never tries to over power my perfumes, which I like. I also have the hand/nail cream in this and love it too! I keep it at the sink after I wash my hands or dishes.

Batiste – We all love dry shampoo, am I right? I have used Suave and Not Your Mother’s in the past…but Batiste is where it’s at! The finish is just amazing for this one. And it smells amazing too! I pick mine up at TJ Maxx for $5.99. I have the thinnest of hair (see above) and this lasts all day with no touch ups needed. If that doesn’t sell you, nothing will!

Coach Wristlet – I was so excited when I got my iPhone 6 Plus that I didn’t even think about the fact that it will not fit in my cell phone holder of my Michael Kors wallet. #firstworldproblems am I right? When we were shopping at Christmas, I stumbled upon this little beauty at the outlets and it holds my phone, lip gloss, all my cards and my keys. Boom! They had it in black, red and the purple that I got. I just love the pop of color.

Confessions

Surely by now you have all figured out that Melissa has re-erected the confessions link up just like an Original Vampire. Am I the only one out there still watching that show? Because I seriously still love it! And I think that was my first confession today!

–I am seriously loving this cold weather that we have been having lately. I can’t help it, Yankee still runs in my blood.

–I have been staring at the gold dog tape dispenser at Target just about every time I am there. Why does $12.99 sound like a ridiculous amount of money to me to pay for a tape dispenser that I don’t need? But loooooook

–I have two days left of Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred. This time it did not leave me shredded and frankly I am sick of JM. I think Joey said it best yesterday – “I want to fling shit at the TV” when she is on.

–Now that I am not listening to Christmas music ever day, I wanted to get some new songs on my Spotify lists. I have attempted to listen to the top 40 station on my way to and from work but like….it’s awful!!! Am I so old that “today’s music” sucks just like Y2K music did to my parents…or does it really just suck these days? It has to be the latter. It just has to. Tell me it is the latter! (With the exception of a few new good songs.

–I have zero interest in award shows anymore. In fact, Monday everyone was all ohhhh that outfit and I was all huh? Apparently some award show was on Sunday night. Meh. Give me all the Revenge and Good Wife!
