Story Behind the Picture – That Time at Idlewild Park

So as you know, I am from Pennsylvania. My parents used to take me to Idlewild Park in Ligonier growing up. Well, there were these VW Buses that you could drive around a track. I watched with anticipation as these other kids drove the cars around and couldn’t wait for my turn!

my you’ve got to be shittin’ me face

Well this little shit decided that he wanted to drive and took my driving spot and made me ride passenger. I was pissed!!! I wanted to drive!!! I threw a tantrum and started crying and refusing to get out of the car. My dad and his adult body self had to climb in to the tiny car and pull me out. My mom stood on the sidelines both mortified and amused by the whole situation. She couldn’t stop laughing.

Fast forward to 2016. I am riding with the Enterprise guy to pick up my rental car last week after my car went to the shop for repairs from the accident. (Which is still a nightmare by the way.) Anyways, the guy is talking about my car acting like it is the best thing ever. “Oh man, we got the perfect car for you. It drives around like a sports car. You are going to love it!” I was like, “Oh?” As we pull up, they are pulling around a bright red VW Beetle. I look at the dude and say, “No really….” Here is a little tip funny black dude from Enterprise, not all white girls dream of driving around a Beetle.

I promptly text my mom, dad and sister pictures of the bug when I get back to my office. Their responses are the exact same…

If you know me even a little bit, you will find this next picture hilarious.

There is nothing wrong with the VW Beetle, it just isn’t me at all. Not even a little. I am not really a fan of the way they look and they are so small. I am an SUV type of girl, always have been. Now, I will be honest and say that I am surprised by how fun this little thing is to drive around town. It really does drive a little bit like a sports car. It picks up really fast, don’t underestimate it. But with that being said, I can’t wait to get my car back!!! If you are thinking about getting a Beetle, it rides nice and gets decent gas mileage. The trunk was large enough to hold our huge grocery haul this weekend. It has a horrible blind spot in the back though when you are trying to pull out of parking places.

A bonus picture from Idlewild that day! This was taken in Story Book Forrest. My favorite area of the park, naturally! I wonder if it is still a part of it?!

Then and now

I would have gotten upset too if some jerk decided that he got to drive instead of me! And that’s too funny that they gave you your own VW to drive around in while you’re car is getting fixed. I was that total stereotypical teenage white girl in high school because I had a bright yellow bug! It was a such a fun car to drive around in, but it could not stand up to the Texas heat and humidity (I secretly think that Germans just don’t know how to make cars for the hot and humid weather we have in the Southern states). Plus it always smelled like crayons too. I loved my little yellow bug, but definitely wouldn’t want to drive one now! I’m a converted small SUV girl, like you!

Ok, I know it’s not your style, but you do look so cute!!! Idlewild sounds fun and I bet that was a comical sight pulling you out!! Cute stories and pics for sure!!

That’s hilarious. I always wanted a VW Beetle when I was in high school, but I’m not as huge a fan, anymore.

Hahaha one time my 6’2 dad had to rent a car and he had to go to a business meeting and the car they gave him was a yellow beetle! He was mortified but it was the only car they had left so he had no choice! He said he got a lot of looks and honks lol

LOL your spot getting ganked, I would have been pissed too! And I will totally co-sign that not all white girls want to drive a VW Beetle. Hilarious pics!

This is SO funny!!! All of it.

I am not an SUV person at all. I feel like I’m driving a bus or a truck. I like my little sedan. Not a VW, though. I need more car than that.

Hahaha I totally wanted a Bug when I was like, 15. Now, not so much. Also I could never drive a 2-door car as my primary car. But at least it’s fun to drive!!

I love throwback pictures with stories like this! They do drive really fast but definitely never want to get rear ended in those things right?

Hahaha omg the texts are priceless. I used to think bugs were cute back in highschool because I guess at the time it was the “cool” thing, but I would seriously never own one nor would I want one for a rental car. Love the story from your childhood 🙂 Can’t really blame you for being upset that he stole your thunder.

Okay, that is hilarious! I would have to turn it down… I’m an SUV girl like you! I would have been like, um, no thanks! Haha! But you do look cute in it!

we had a ride at our amusement park similar to this – not VWs but cars, and I NEVER got to ride. the ‘perks’ of having 2 brothers lol.

  • Reply kristen January 20, 2016 at 1:05 pm

Come on girl, you are rocking the punch buggie! I think it would be fun to have . . . as a RENTAL. I can’t imagine owning one . . . they seem so tiny! And I love this picture idea post . . . so sweet to see these throwback photos and hear the stories!

  • Reply Heather January 21, 2016 at 9:02 am

The bugs have pretty bad repair nightmares so I never got one but thought about getting one when they came out with the convertibles. I love the selfie stick of you in the car!!

  • Reply Amanda January 24, 2016 at 5:03 pm

LOL That tantrum sounds like something I would’ve done as a kid, too!
I like the Beetles now… they’re much more sleek! But I’m with you… I don’t know if I could ever see myself driving around in one. Of course, anything is pretty much better than what I have now, lol
