Books

Book day!!! I only have three this month, but they deserve a look! Linking up with Steph and Jana.

Puddin’ by Julie Murphy

Puddin'

I loved Dumplin, so I had to check out Puddin! Spoiler alert: I loved it too! I loved Millie’s character and you really get to see her and Callie’s characters develop. This book had me smiling and laughing a lot. It was such a cute read, and definitely a few good life lessons thrown in! You have to love a book where you don’t care for one of the characters through most of the book, but love them in the end.

Bottom Line: Read it!

Summerland by Elin Hilderbrand

Summerland

This is everything you expect from Elin. A Nantucket beach setting, with lots of characters who all twist together. I will be honest, this wasn’t my favorite from her…but still a good read!

Bottom Line: If you are a Hilderbrand fan, it is worth the read!

A Grown- Up Kind of Pretty by Joshilyn Jackson

A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty

I didn’t read what this one was about before I started it. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a mystery of sorts. This story is told from three points of view, the grandmother, mother and daughter. I liked that it alternated between the three and you get glimpses of the past thrown in. It still has all of Joshilyn’s messed up southern family touches to it, and just a super interesting story about baby bones found in a backyard.

Bottom Line: Read it!

I love Millie as a character, and I’m glad she got her own book. I liked Dumplin’ more but this was a great follow-up.

I’m glad all your books were good ones! I mildly enjoyed Dumplin’ so I’m not sure I’ll pick up Puddin’. I saw Rebecca Jo wasn’t a fan but you are! I love seeing the different reviews across SUYB day!! 😀

Dumplin’ the book that the new Netflix movie is based off, I assume? I had never heard of it until I saw it on Netflix. I’ll have to check it out! I have The Lies We Told checked out from the library right now so I look forward to seeing if you like it!

I SOOO wanted to just love Puddin’… but I just could NOT get in the mood for it.
I will try it again later though.

I just finished up Dumplin’ last month and I loved it so much! I can’t wait to pick up the second book, especially since it centers around some of the secondary characters. Did you have a chance to watch the Netflix movie yet? I haven’t, but I’ve heard good things about it!

  • Reply Lauren January 8, 2019 at 1:40 pm

I’m going to give Joshilyn Jackson’s book a try!

Puddin’ was so great! And I loved the actress for Millie in the Dumplin’ movie, so I really hope we get to see her do a Puddin’ movie (the actress for Callie is probably great too, but just wasn’t on screen very much). Enjoyed one of Jackson’s other stories so may pick up Pretty!

I absolutely adored The Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson but now I’m hesitant to read her others because the descriptions don’t sound that interesting. Isn’t that crazy? I’m glad to hear you liked this one so I might have to give it a try.

I’ve had a grown-up kind of pretty on my list forever! I just read Dumplin’ this month, so I might have to do Puddin’ soon!

Loved Dumplin and have not read Puddin yet!! Have you watched the Dumplin movie on Netflix? I’ve heard it is really good (And I have also been delighted to tell at least 3 different people that it was based on a very well done book) haha. I need a little break from Elin Hilderbrand but will likely pick her up again later this year.

  • Reply Marie January 9, 2019 at 9:52 am

Ok I had no idea Dumplin was based a book. I thought the movie was adorable. Now, I have to read the books. I have Summerland but I haven’t read it yet. I really like her books though. I’m reading The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah. It’s really good. Sad but good.

I think I’m in the minority, but I liked Puddin’ so much more than Dumplin’! Probably because Willowdean really annoyed me, and Millie is so sweet, and I loved the growth and turn-around in Callie’s character. I read The Lies We Told a few months ago, so I’m curious to hear what you think of it!

  • Reply Michael January 10, 2019 at 11:06 am

I still need to read Puddin’ and Dumplin’. I always feel like I’m behind on books. I read The Lies We Told as an ARC so I’m curious to see your thoughts on it.

  • Reply Danielle January 14, 2019 at 1:48 pm

I didn’t know Puddin was a sequel to Dumplin. I just watched the netflix movie. How is the current book?

  • Reply Biana January 14, 2019 at 8:07 pm

Cant wait to hear your thoughts on the lies we told – that sounds like my kind of read! I liked dumplin, but haven’t heard of puddin before!! xo, Biana –BlovedBoston
