Holla for a Dolla

With the economy like it is, and prices constantly rising, money can be tight some times. Let’s be honest, the money that we make now isn’t near as much as it used to be growing up. The fact that our grocery bill each week for two people ranges from $120-$180 for ONE week is just ridiculous!!! Now, this does include some essentials when needed such as cleaning products, some personal care items, light bulbs, laundry detergent etc. Chris and I cook dinners at least 4 nights a week and take our lunches to work at least 4 days of the week. I eat breakfast in the mornings every morning, Chris only eats breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. So that gives you an idea of how much we are purchasing. I try to make at least one meal a week that can be reheated as a left over a second day. We don’t buy in excess so food doesn’t go to waste.

With all that said, I have tried very hard to cut our grocery bill down. There is only so much that you can cut, especially when trying to eat healthy. I mean, a box of Kraft Mac and Cheese or a package of Ramen noodle soup is super cheap, but I don’t want to eat all that processed shit. (Don’t get me wrong, I love both and it makes me sad to try not to consume them anymore.) I decided the only way to cut our bill without cutting out nutritious, wholesome meals was to cut coupons and shop deals every where I can.

Now, before you think this is a sponsored post by Target, I assure you it is not. I am just saving too much money not to share. If you are from Target and you are reading this, please feel free to throw me some money or free products and hook a girl up?!

We do about 95% of our grocery shopping at Target. We have a Target card that automatically gives us 5% off every single thing we purchase from there. Hello. Why wouldn’t you have one of these glorious cards?! Last year we saved almost $400 just with that card! Since I do my grocery shopping at Target, I downloaded the Cartwheel App a few months ago. This app is amazing! I have saved over $20 in the last two months with it. We get a free local newspaper in the mail once a week. About 8/10 times, there is a coupon book in there along with the Publix sales ad for the week. I cut out a coupon for every single thing that I might purchase. Now, I don’t buy something just because I have a coupon for it. I only use them when we are going to actually need the product. I also look at the Publix ad because lets be honest, Target doesn’t always have everything I need, so I sometimes I have shop at both stores each week. If Publix has their salad mix buy one get one free, I will get it from there instead that week or look at other deals on things we might need.

Shopping at Target also provides coupons. At least 2/3 of the time they will hand me 5-6 coupons with my receipt that printed out, and they are all on products that I actually use. Last week I got a FREE item coupon, $1 off produce, $1 off fresh meats, and $1 off fresh veggies. Hello!!!! I buy all those things EVERY week, I will take the $3! That money adds up quick!

The great thing is that the Cartwheel app can be used in combination with coupons and your 5% card. Sometimes I might save a couple of dollars on an item or get it almost for free with the combination of the three! Last week I saved $33 dollars with cartwheel, my card and coupons. This past week I saved $21 with the combination. I felt like a freaking rock star walking out of Target with all my savings!!!

Now, not every week can I get $30 in savings, even if it is only 50 cents I will be excited because that is 50 cents I have to put towards something else!! While this takes a little planning on my part, between cutting coupons, going through the cartwheel app each week and adding and removing different deals based on our grocery list, it is time well spent. I look at it as I am getting paid to do it. And, once you meal plan and look up deals for a few weeks, you get into a rhythm and it takes hardly any time at all.

I feel like my inner cheap chinawomen Kathy is coming out! But, if I can keep extra doll hairs in my wallet to spend on something fun rather than a necessity, then gosh darn, bring it on!

Another great thing about being a Target Red Card customer is that I get catalogs in the mail every now and then that will have a $10 off $50 on it. Around Christmas, I had a $25 of $150 coupon!!!! A FREE $25?!?! I felt like I won the lottery!

Another way I have gotten some great coupons in through BzzAgent. It is sort of like Influenster. They send me products to review, or coupons to purchase products and then tweet about it, write a review for their site, or share with my friends or readers. They also give me coupons to hand out to my friends. Almost every time I meet the girls for lunch lately, I have had a coupon to hand out and a new product to buzz about. It has been really fun!

So, are you trying to coupon and save money where you can? Don’t worry, you wont find me on an episode of Extreme Couponing on TLC. Though, you may find me on hoarders for all the pets I want to save! (It’s ok, I still only have 2 dogs but a girl can dream, no?)

Confessions – The Scale is a Lying Whore

The scale really is a lying whore. I need to break up with her for good. (I assume the scale is a she because she really is a mean bitch.) The thing is….I cant help it. I see it sitting there while I am getting ready every morning. Most of the time I ignore her and just go on about my day….but every now and then I get the urge to step on just to see. I have this hope that if I get on and see a lower number, I will feel some sense of accomplishment and a huge rush of motivation will come over me. But, lets be honest. Most of the time I step on and I start cussing and then throw shit around in my closet for ten minutes while getting dressed because nothing is going to look good.

Why do we do this? Why do we define our self worth by a number? A number that means nothing? I am guilty of it no matter how much I try to tell myself I am not. I know better. I know that my work outs are working because my clothes fit better and I feel stronger and healthier (most days). So why do I get on the scale and demotivate myself?! I can sit there and say all day that I wont do it anymore…and I do great for a few days. Then one morning I am on the scale and in the never ending cycle.

It is the same damn 5 lbs over and over again. Some mornings it is gone, some mornings it is there. Why cant I get myself over those 5 lbs?! It is all a mental game once I see it. I know what I need to do, I need to not splurge and cut all cheat meals for a few weeks. I need to come home and do crunches and lift some weights instead of sit on the couch and watch TV after work.

Fashion Pins

I do so great with waking up at 4:30am Monday – Friday to get in my T25 work outs. I pack my lunch four of the five days each and every week full of healthy foods. The day I meet my friends for girl’s lunch, I try to choose the healthiest option I can while eating out. We have healthy meals for dinner at least Monday-Friday, sometimes more than that. Then the weekend hits and I don’t know…I just want to let go of having to try so hard and be conscience of everything I eat and just be. I want all the food. I want a cheeseburger and fries. I want chips and salsa. (Damn those chips and salsa!!!!) I want a beer if we are out socializing. And all of those things are OK, if I didn’t do them EVERY weekend. Or if I only did it for ONE meal each weekend. But, it sort of turns into an all day Saturday and Sunday fat ass fest.

weight loss motivation

I know what I have to do. The thing is, loosing weight is really quite simple. All you have to do is eat wholesome, healthy and portioned foods and work out. Now why in the hell is that so hard for me to do all the time? I know that if I try as hard on the weekends as I do all week, I would be in such a better place. I basically undo everything I have worked so hard for each and every week in one or two days. That cycle ends now.

Are you struggling with the same few pounds? How did you overcome your struggles and keep loosing more?

What Kind of Dog are You and Cake Batter Dip

Sooooo I saw this quiz on Buzzfeed the other day and I HAD to take it immediately. There were two questions that I had a hard time picking between two answers for…so I did it twice and this is what I got.

The first time I got a Great Dane, the second time I got a Pug. Not quite sure how these two dogs are similar enough based on two different answers….but its what I got. I am not surprised about the Pug seeing as how I have a Puggle! The first suggests I should be the duchess of Cambridge. Sure, I will take it!

Capture Pug

So if you want to have some fun, go take the quiz and let me know what dog you would be! Then lets join a pack, because I love all dogs 🙂

And if you are here for my weekly recipe, I cant promise that this weeks is super healthy. What I can promise is that it is delicious!!!! And not horribly bad. Just a little bad.

20140201-082018.jpg

You guys. This is seriously one of the easiest most tastiest recipes that I have. Cake Batter Dip! The name alone has me drooling on my keyboard. This is great to have to snack on throughout the week or serve at a party. Adults and children alike will devour this stuff, it is quite amazing!

20140201-082052.jpg

What you need:

1 box of cake mix, any flavor that you choose! My favorites are the vanilla and white cake mixes.

1 container of cool whip (I usually prefer to use the lite but this is all my local, rural Dollar General had when I had my hankering, so you gotta do what you gotta do!)

1 and 1/2 cups of yogurt, you want to use plain or vanilla

Nilla Wafers, Animal Crackers or Fruit for serving (My favorite is Nilla Wafers!!)

What you do:

Combine the cool whip, yogurt and cake mix. Let it chill a little bit. That is it!

See, so easy!!!! I even mix it up in a Rubbermaid container that I can throw a lid on and put directly into the refrigerator to make it even easier! Less mess/dishes to clean = huge win!

Also note that if you use white cake mix, the dip is going to be white. When I am just making this for us to snack on I leave it that way. If I am making this for a party or my nieces and nephews…I will add food coloring or sprinkles to make it look pretty. I just don’t like adding that just for snacking purposes.

On the menu this week:

Lunches:

Tomato Soup and Pita Bread with Hummus

Salad with Tomato Soup and carrots

Dinners:

Kung Pao Chicken with Stir Fry Veggies

Salsa Chicken with Brown Spanish Rice

Mexican Skillet Casserole (We ended up not having it last week due to snow and used the ground beef for something else this weekend.)

Workout Plan:

I am re-doing the 2nd week of T25. I missed 3 days last week because of the damn snow and being thrown off schedule. I am determined to do this entire workout the correct way, so if I miss more than one day…I start over for that week. Damn illness and weather. I might not finish the entire 3 month series before the end of winter to meet my goal, but I am very proud of myself for sticking to it and keep coming back even though I get off track. I almost have the cardio day memorized because I have done it so much! I feel like having started over, I am nailing the work outs better and doing less modified versions now, which feels amazing! I can rock the Beta month full force this way.

Six More Weeks of Winter

So according to Phil, (the real ground hog, not the Georgia poser General Beau Lee that almost always predicts the opposite of Phil) says there will be six more weeks of winter. Are any of us really surprised? No. Although, it was feeling mighty springish yesterday with temps around 70 degrees in these parts!

Time for a weekend review:

Friday – Friday felt weird. After working from home Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday and Thursday….Friday felt more like Monday. That is just down right wrong. I wasn’t complaining when 5:00 pm rolled around and it was time for the weekend! We decided to get some Chinese take out and watch TV Friday night. Perfect!

Saturday – I cleaned the house Saturday morning, got some stuff put away that I have been meaning to get to in our guest room, and purged some items in my closet that I will most likely never wear again. I also made some cake batter dip to snack on for the weekend, recipe to come tomorrow! Then we went shopping for some new work clothes for Chris, as he starts his new job today! I never realized how little options there were for guys for clothes until this weekend. We went to Kohls, Nordstrom Rack, Belk, Gap, and JCPenney in search for some new items for him. We had some success, but I feel there should be more stores for guys! Something comparable to Loft or NY &  Company.

After shopping, we headed to Blackwells for some food and a beer. Much needed after running around! It was delicious. Although, the delivery trucks never made it there and they were out of half the beers they usually have. It was still good! We then spent some time with Chris’s parents and then called it a night.

Sunday – I headed out to get the grocery shopping down early to avoid the rain. It felt good to get it done so soon. We pretty much spent the rest of the day watching TV.

I FINALLY found the Thin Mint creamer at Target. Yummmmmmm!!!!!! I am going to need to stalk up on it since it is a “limited time” item!

And that was my weekend folks. I leave you with a picture of the dogs. 20140203-061303.jpg
