Confessions

It’s confession time, people!

–I never know whether or not to tip when ordering take out (where you go to pick it up), a fast casual restaurant where they don’t serve you but have a tip line, or drive thrus for BBQ places. If I do tip out of guilt, it is usually $2. It’s like here is a little something, but you didn’t serve me all you did was take my money and hand me a bag so do you really deserve a tip? What is protocol on this? Am I the only one who feels awkward? At normal restaurants I feel I tip more than the average person, but that is because I am being served.

–Zoe laughs when I dance for her. I love to hear her laugh, it is the best thing in the WORLD!!! But ummmm should I be insulted that she finds my dancing funny.

–I have been behind on my magazine reading since November. Literally piles of magazines cover a corner on my office floor. I think I am just going to throw them out and start with March issues as they come. It is too overwhelming otherwise!!!

–Do you have a Youtube channel that you are obsessed with? I love watching Makeup By Tiffany D. Maybe I should have shared it in my add to the list post yesterday instead of confessing my obsession. Oops. But I have been watching her channel for years. She sort of talks to you like she is catching up over coffee. She reviews makeup, does makeup tutorials, does vlogs of her everyday life (that almost makes me want to start one) and when she was pregnant she updated every week with what was going on in her pregnancy and has since done a few favorite items/kid updates. I think I really like her because she lives in the Atlanta area. Sometimes I really miss Atlanta. Share your Youtube obsession with me!

–I am typing this post in my “office area” and I seriously just got the urge to throw out everything in here because the mess is driving me nuts. I have to be in the right mood to purse, anyone else? So I am going to go do some of that while the urge is real. And before Zoe wakes up from her nap.

I tip for takeout, but it’s mostly because I used to wait tables myself, so I know what goes into it. Basically, they do serve you. You just never see it, and that’s where I think it’s problematic. I don’t fault people for not tipping for takeout because I know that they typically don’t know better. There’s a psychological need to witness something to fully believe it exists, and for all the takeout customer knows, the kitchen did all the work and the waitress just rung it all up.

The waitress still had to take time out from her seated customers to take the order and get it ready for you. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s still something that takes her time and attention away from seated customers. (There are exceptions to the rule where in some restaurants the kitchen or hostess will do all of this, but wait staff does it for most restaurants.)

Meanwhile, we’re dealing with an antiquated system where restaurants keep prices artificially low by basically not paying or barely paying for labor. They instead count on customers to pay their service employees. Without tips, servers are basically working for next to nothing, and it’s really the only industry left where that’s considered socially acceptable. Tipping isn’t a huge deal for me because I consider it to be part of the cost of having someone else cook for me. I don’t tip my usual amount for takeout, since there wasn’t a full hour of filling drinks and checking in on me, but I do at least tip 10% for the small service that was provided. I can’t seem to enjoy my meal as much if I think of the fact that I paid less because someone else didn’t get paid.

Sorry if I sound like I’m trying to guilt. I’m not. Again, I tend to not fault takeout customers for not knowing because they don’t see it and might not have any experience in the industry. I just figured I’d shed some light on the situation.

I’m on a purge binge too. Note, I haven’t purged anything, but the desire to chuck it all out is there.

  • Reply Lindsay Latimer March 1, 2017 at 8:56 am

I was in the mood to purge Sunday and got a lot done… but I have a long way to go. I definitely have to be in the mood, too! I weirdly don’t watch any YouTube channels but will be checking that one out!

It depends on the take out. I am never sure at the places where you order at the counter and they bring you your food and then nothing else. I usually throw a dollar or two out there because I feel bad.

So funny story… Tiffany D. is my best friends cousin. That blonde you see with me in all my IG pics, yeah she’s a D. also lol. Small world and if you don’t know her story of starting in her closet it’s pretty amazing. She has been so successful it’s insane.

I go back & forth on the take out. It all depends on my mood & the place.

  • Reply Andrea @ Living On Cloud Nine March 1, 2017 at 10:06 am

I love that Zoe finds your dancing funny!! I’m so ready for a good purge of some of my closets!! Have the BEST day!!

When the hostess is the one who is packing my food up, I may or may not leave a tip depending on how nice they were to me when they greeted me. When I was a server, we actually tipped out to the hostesses and bus boys AND they received a higher wage than we did (we made servers wages, I believe they made at least minimum wage). If they are really nice, I’ll tip $2. If my food isn’t ready when expected, no tip. I’m also very stern about amounts tipped and I often have to tell Teh German he’s overtipping, especially if we’ve had shitty service. I refuse to reward shitty service.

  • Reply Allison Arnone March 1, 2017 at 10:50 am

I NEVER tip for anything other than delivery and actually eating in the restaurant and getting served. If I called it in and picked it up? No. It DOES feel weird when the person at the counter watches you sign the receipt and X out the ‘tip’ line – sorrrrrry!

  • Reply Rebecca Jo March 1, 2017 at 10:50 am

The last words… odds are in my favor!!!
I am the same way about the take out thing. I feel so guilty leaving nothing there – a blank… Ricky told me that you dont tip take out. Who gets it? … I dont know – I just felt horrible leaving nothing there.
sometimes I just sign & dont put in numbers & just run out – that’s so dangerous now that I think about it.

  • Reply Lauren @ Oh Hey! I Like That! March 1, 2017 at 10:52 am

Girl, I’m ALWAYS confused about tipping when getting take-out. I almost feel like they’re watching to see if I write something in the “Tip” line…

  • Reply kathy @ more coffee, less talky March 1, 2017 at 10:58 am

of course, I didn’t create a post because fucking work….it ruins everything!

i dont tip when i order take out and pick up….should i feel like an asshole for that? i always tip if i’m sitting down and people are serving me.

  • Reply Stephanie March 1, 2017 at 11:11 am

I tip. Because it’s never very much, ya know? A couple bucks. If I can afford to be picking up food instead of cooking myself, I can afford to tip a little extra on it. I don’t ‘need’ those couple dollars and maybe they do, so I just do it. And if I have to save money, I cut eating out altogether, not just the tip part.
I’m always in the mood to purge 😉 But I understand that feeling for sure, you have to be ready and motivated!

  • Reply Biana @ Blovedboston March 1, 2017 at 11:30 am

Oh the tip struggle – I have the same questions as you!! I love that she smiles / laughs when you dance – she loves you and NO you most certainly should not be offended LOL! xo, Biana –BlovedBoston

  • Reply SMD @ Life According to Steph March 1, 2017 at 11:40 am

I rarely get takeout – it’s either delivery or sit down for me. I can’t recall the last time I picked up food somewhere.

  • Reply Audrey March 1, 2017 at 11:43 am

That last meme is so accurate.
I do the $2 tip, too, on takeout and weird stuff. I never know… lol.
I got home from work the other day and was in the purge mood so I went through my closet. Then I shopped the ON sale *facepalm*

  • Reply Robin March 1, 2017 at 12:36 pm

I don’t tip at restaurants like that. A server did not spend time checking on me, bringing me my food, and cleaning up after me. It’s basically like going to McDonald’s or Chick-Fil-A, and you wouldn’t tip the cashier at those places.

  • Reply marie March 1, 2017 at 12:42 pm

I too always struggle with tipping when getting take out. Oh I so need to do a house cleaning and do some purging. I’m scared to look in my coat closet, I have been just throwing stuff in there. One day I gotta clean it out. One day..

  • Reply Cara March 1, 2017 at 1:16 pm

Lol the mopped one is so me! Gah if there’s one area in the home I fall short with, it’s that. I hate to mop. Also, you should check out Emily Noel on Youtube. She’s super down to earth and her reviews are always on point.

  • Reply Emelia March 1, 2017 at 1:37 pm

I don’t tip much for carry out or pick up orders. I feel like most of the work is done in the kitchen by the cooks so it’s not necessary to tip for someone handing it to you. Sorry if that sounds bad haha. I used to work in a restaurant and I wasn’t offended if I handed someone their food and they didn’t tip. I need to check out that you tube channel- sounds very interesting!

  • Reply kristen March 1, 2017 at 1:53 pm

i am the worst at tipping advice since, you know, not american, but i tip a few dollars when i pick up. i figure, they are working hard and getting me my food, and they might pool tips with the entire staff, so who knows.
i don’t really watch youtube videos anymore, but i used to love that one! she’s so fun.

  • Reply Rach @ This Italian Family March 1, 2017 at 2:33 pm

Oooh SUCH a good question about whether or not to tip on take out food! I have had the same internal struggle as well! I enjoyed reading everyone’s responses here. Honestly, I used to always tip on take out just because I felt like I should because the tip line was there. But now it just depends on the situation. Most of the time when I’m getting take-out, it’s from the sushi place by our house and everyone there knows us because we eat there and carry out so often. So a lot of times I’ll tip even when getting take out (even though it’s the sushi making guy who packages the meal-to go and brings it to the front (so no servers were involved in it) just because we have a good relationship with them. And I want to keep getting good service. 😉 But it is interesting reading all these different responses. So odd that there isn’t like a standard answer for whether or not to tip on carry out!

So funny that Zoe laughs at you while dancing. Kind of adorable! 🙂

I’m checking out the Youtube channel you mentioned. I want to watch her weekly pregnancy videos and hear what she has to say! 🙂

Ugh, my house needs a good purge and a good clean so bad. I just get to caught up in other things that I don’t do it. From waiting tables in the past, I always tip regardless — I used to work the to-go area as well, and they still only paid us $5 an hour — while the restaurant expected us to take the order, get the order in the bag, take it out to the car, bring in payment, take card/change back out and help all the servers on the floor. I need make up help, so I definitely want to check out that youtube!

  • Reply Ashley @ The Wandering Weekenders March 1, 2017 at 9:23 pm

I never know whether I should tip when I order take away as well! I mean they’re not really doing anything, but they’re doing something. I normally just end up doing a small tip.

  • Reply texerinsydney March 1, 2017 at 9:27 pm

I really intended to do some purging while on my mini-vacay from employment. Didn’t happen. Only thing I’ve purged is my bookstack of read books. I needed to purge shoes, clothes, and linens too. It’ll happen someday.

  • Reply Emily @ Martinis & Bikinis March 1, 2017 at 9:35 pm

I hear ya on the tipping for takeout…I feel guilty not to tip but then again tips are for service. I usually do $1 or $2 if I’m feeling nice….sometimes I don’t tip and walk away feeling bad but who knows what the real etiquette should be? Aww I’m sure Zoe laughs brighten your day. A happy baby is a happy mom!

Ellie has zero interest in my dancing, but she loves when I make her dance haha. My magazines are in a stack and I throw away ones from the bottom every now and then. I hardly ever read them :). I never tip for takeout if I pick it up for the same reasons. I used to work at Pizza Hut as a cashier and it was nice when people tipped me, but I didn’t expect it.

  • Reply Kaitlyn March 5, 2017 at 11:19 am

I tip on to-go. Not as much as I would if I were sitting down to eat, but like you, a couple of dollars. I worked to-go at one point and loved my customers that tipped. I try to pay it forward. I’ll have to check out Tiffany’s youtube channel. I follow several vloggers. I’ll watch make-up tutorials, music videos, dance videos, and whatever else while I’m on the elliptical at the gym. Why haven’t gyms come up with a way to listen to the sound on workout equipment via bluetooth?! That’s what I want to know lol. They’re all equipped with the old plug ins that don’t fit anyones modern day phone.
