Lesson Learned

Sometimes life likes to teach you a lesson, when you are ready for it or not! We have all been there, right? A good smack up side the head from life. Lesson learned.

–Technology will always fail you when you need it the most or are in a time crunch. Exhibit A: Last Friday when I gave up and left work at 4:30pm because our entire system went down when I had two more jobs to finish. I am claiming not my fault on that.

–Everything always goes on sale. If you are shopping in a retail store (Kohls, Macy’s, Loft) and you fall in love with an $88 sweater remember these words: IT WILL EVENTUALLY GO ON SALE. And if you ignore those words and buy it anyways, next weekend it will be on sale for at least half off AFTER you already took the tags off and wore it. Just wait!!!

–But don’t wait to buy anything at TJ Maxx, HomeGoods or Marshall’s!!! Marshall’s Law states that if you see something you love and you come back for it later it will be gone. Do not test this theory, you will be sorry.

–If you don’t stop and fill up your gas tank on the way home, I promise you that you will be running late the next morning and completely forget that you need gas until you start your car up and then you are FUCKED. Mine as well stop and grab a Starbucks too because you are already late.

–Avoid Petsmart at all costs on Saturdays. There is always a doggie adoption going on and you are going to spend 20 minutes staring into those sad Β eyes wanting to love them all and bring them home but you know you cant. Then you start sobbing as you wait in line at the register to buy dog food for your spoiled mutt at home and think that life just isn’t fair.

–When you are thirty and up, you just simply cannot drink like you could in your twenties. It is scientific fact that on your 30th birthday the switch changes and you are done.

–Anytime you spend time or money on washing the outside of your car, it will without fail rain within 24 hours. Perhaps the next time there is a drought, they shouldn’t ban car washing. That is the only rain dance the rain gods listen to.

–No matter how good the TV show or book is past 10pm on a week night, just stop. You are too old to stay up until midnight then wake up at 4:30am and be a functioning human.

Haha love this Nadine! Definitely follow the rule about waiting for it to go on sale. I always snap a picture of it and then snatch that puppy up once it goes half off or more. And totally agree with the not staying up late one. lol

So true with the gas stop. I try to make myself stop after work so that I won’t be late the next morning, but I want to go home XD.

  • Reply carly August 31, 2016 at 9:33 am

It’s so true that the internet stops working when you’re trying to do something super important! I constantly struggle with that last someecard! Sometimes it’s so hard to stop reading or not watch one more episode, but the next day I’m always like why? haha πŸ™‚

Murphy’s Law is an asshole. Straight up asshole.

And the running late thing? Just wait until your kid is here. You ain’t seen nothing yet.

Also, YES to the 10PM rule. DVR is available for a reason. Almost nothing on TV (books are an exception) is worth being tired the next day.

hahaha this is 100% true. esp the gas one. i’ve done that SO MANY TIMES that now, i just stop for an extra 3mins to get gas and thank myself in the morning when i’m trying to get to the highway in light traffic (which turns to heavy traffic in the span of 5 minutes. how does that happen)

  • Reply Lindsay Latimer August 31, 2016 at 9:58 am

Oh god these are all so true and I’ve learned every single one the hard way. I spend many weekends hungover after like 3 beers the night before because at 30 my body was like “nope.” You’ve got gold here, friend!

  • Reply Rebecca Jo August 31, 2016 at 10:11 am

I actually try to get my hubby in Petsmart on Sundays just for that reason… try to guilt him into another dog πŸ˜‰ haha

  • Reply StephTheBookworm August 31, 2016 at 10:53 am

Eek, I have that problem with the gas tank a lot! Oops.

Yup, I always stay up late reading and then completely regret it the next day. 10:00 should really be my cut off time too.

  • Reply Mattie @ Northwest Native August 31, 2016 at 10:58 am

Ahh yay thanks for linking up! Love ALL of these! The getting gas one always gets me. We were near Petsmart on Sunday a couple weeks ago and Michael actually wanted to go in BECAUSE there was an adoption event. Spoiler alert: IT WAS THE WORST! I wanted to adopt all of them. So depressing.

So true! Especially the gas & car washing!

  • Reply Lexi August 31, 2016 at 11:18 am

Thanks for linking up! You’re right, it’s like technology waits for something super important and then fails. Ugh!

The Petsmart Saturday adoption thing is how we ended up with our youngest pup. I’d actually gone there with the intention of looking to see if they had any puppies or smaller dogs, as I wanted to go from a one-dog home to a two-dog home, and I figured that a smaller dog would be easier to start out with.

We left falling in love with a 18-month-old 60-pound lab/boxer mix and adopted him the very next week.

UGH — getting gas. My arch nemesis. It is seriously the worst. THE WORST. Although I know I should follow your lesson learned, I refuse. I will not let the gas pump win. πŸ™‚ YES. I never wait to buy anything at Home Goods. I’m even too afraid to leave it there while I’m circling the store — that bad boy stays in my cart until I’ve made the decision. And then I put it back — probably not where it belongs, because I’m a horrible person. πŸ™‚

Amen to drinking in your 30s, when I do get HOs now it’s because I drank like nothing yet it lasts all day…

and technology is so annoying like that!

And I ALWAYS try to fill up my gas tank even if I don’t need to and just want to go home for that exact reason.

  • Reply Erin LFF August 31, 2016 at 12:53 pm

These are great! The gas thing was seriously the story of my LIFE while I was still working. And yes, I would totally grab a coffee or snack or something while I was late because what’s a few extra minutes at this point?! lol

  • Reply Andrea @ Living On Cloud Nine August 31, 2016 at 1:33 pm

Oh how love this while nodding my head clear through. Many of these lessons I have learned the hard way. Our bedtime is definitely 10, can’t really drink more than 2 drinks and how true about sales and buy it now at the Marshalls trilogy. LOVE THIS!!

  • Reply Dani August 31, 2016 at 2:18 pm

Huge yes to all of these! I had a technology hiccup last week. I had to do my first new student orientation and the laptop I brought didn’t have an HDMI outlet. I had to borrow a student’s just to deliver the presentation- an IT presentation at that! And yeah, never test Marshall’s Law- buy it and leave the tags on for a few days if you need time to decide! Haha, great lessons!

  • Reply Audrey August 31, 2016 at 2:42 pm

“Marshall’s Law”- hahaha, SO true. Some many things I wish I’d have just bought on the spot!
Pet Smart is the BEST on the weekend because you can pet and love on those dogs. I strategically try to go on Saturdays, haha!
Just go through an automatic car wash πŸ˜‰

Haha! All such true life lessons!

  • Reply Kate @ Green Fashionista August 31, 2016 at 4:49 pm

LOL these are all SO TRUE! Especially retail items inevitably going on sale right after you buy it, it raining/storming right after a carwash, and technology failing when you need it the most πŸ˜›

  • Reply Teh Megan August 31, 2016 at 5:18 pm

It’s currently mercury retrograde, so I’ve been blaming all my technology fails on that. I don’t overly believe in astrology, but there is some truth to full moon crazy, so I semi-believe in mercury retrograde.

Generally, if you buy an item and it goes on sale, some stores will match the sales price if it’s within a certain period of time.

My 30 year old body does NOT recover well at all. From injuries to hangovers. I just can’t.

  • Reply mandie August 31, 2016 at 5:41 pm

Oh goodness, I have to stay away from Petco/Petsmart on Saturdays just for that same reason – I want to bring all the puppies & kitties home with me cuz they are just so stinkin’ adorable.

  • Reply Robin August 31, 2016 at 9:01 pm

Having worked in retail in the past, I both like and dislike sales. There are lot of ways that stores trick you into thinking that you are getting a deal. For example, many major stores have high fake “original” prices, and then a “sale” price, so it looks as if you are saving money.
The animals in PetSmart always make me want to cry. πŸ™

  • Reply Tracie August 31, 2016 at 10:10 pm

These are all facts. Like hardcore facts of like.

  • Reply alyssa August 31, 2016 at 10:24 pm

YES I totally live by the knowledge that everything will go on sale, but if I see something I can’t stop thinking about at TJMaxx or Homegoods I need to grab it right then and there. So true about the gas tank tooβ€”every damn time!

  • Reply Rachel G September 1, 2016 at 5:39 am

The one about everything eventually going on sale–especially at Kohl’s! Is so, so true.

  • Reply Amy Getz September 1, 2016 at 6:44 am

Nadine – these were awesome and all so true! I was like Yep to every single one!!!! LOL!

  • Reply kristen September 1, 2016 at 12:42 pm

lol yes to might as well grab a starbucks as you’re already late. i do that every single time i forget gas the night before. and yes to everything on sale! and yes to getting things at tj maxx or marshalls… i am still sad i didn’t get a jacket i saw in december last year. i found it online and it’s of course double the price. rage! i don’t know if i should get it, i’m still thinking about it 10 months later and kicking myself that i didn’t get it! i even went back to look for it, and you can guess how well that went!

  • Reply Erika September 1, 2016 at 1:47 pm

Yes, yes, yes to all of these. Especially Marshall’s Law. Never fails.

  • Reply Jenna B September 1, 2016 at 2:27 pm

Oh my goodness! Yes to all of this! I can totally relate the the technology issues and waiting to buy gas then running late. It’s like a science that those things will happen! And I seriously almost left Petsmart with a kitten last weekend. It took all my will power to walk away.

  • Reply Jessica @ Pleas(e) & Carrots September 2, 2016 at 9:44 am

These are all so true! I am getting to be such an old lady, I can’t drink anymore without feeling like complete crap the next day, and I always go to bed now at like 9pm!

  • Reply Ashley @ The Wandering Weekenders September 3, 2016 at 2:41 pm

I hae to avoid Petsmart on the weekends too! It just makes me so sad! And my mom’s biggest piece of advice has always been to only buy things on sale and to never pay full price for stuff. It always goes on sale! And yes to not staying up late during the week! I just can’t function without the limited amount of sleep that I’m getting right now anways!
