Fitbit or HRM?

So, I have a question for all you active people out there. I am trying to decide if I should get a Fitbit or a HRM….or both? I am thinking I eventually want both, as they seem to have different features that everyone likes.

I have done some research on both products. It seems the general consensus is that the Fitbit is great for all day every day activity. That overall, people that use it become more active because they want to say their steps per day increase and such. It is great for tracking walking/running…but not so much at biking or weight lifting work outs. It is up in the air with the elliptical machine. Some people say that it tracks it perfectly, others say it doesn’t work as well because of the smooth motion of the elliptical and it isn’t tracking the elliptical’s resistance.

The more expensive versions of the Fitbit also track sleeping patterns, which I find interesting. I feel that most nights I get a pretty restful sleep…but I would love to see what kind of tracking I would have.

Research shows that the HRM is great for cardio activity and other work outs, but you wouldn’t want to wear it 24/7. It seems that the HRM is going to be more accurate for calories burned during a workout. I would definitely want one that shows the calories burned.

I bought a Fitbit over the weekend for a really good deal, but it doesn’t work. It is not registering as I am trying to set it up. I am going to take it back this week and see if I can exchange it for another. I am nervous that maybe it won’t work either. If I can get it for the great deal that I found, it would be great because then I could justify purchasing a HRM in the future too since I am getting such a great deal on the Fitbit One. However, if they are such a great deal because they are defective…then not so much. I found it at Bargain Hunt. (You gotta check the place out if you haven’t already!)

I am sure that both of these are great options for fitness, but I am wondering if any of you have an opinion on either and how they work for you. If you have a HRM, which brand and model did you purchase?

Weekend Shenanigans -The One with the Lake and Food

Yeah, Monday….what do we have here? I am pretty sure I sent you a memo about coming a day later than usual this week? You didn’t get it? Drat.

Guess it is time for the weekend shenanigans!

Sami's Shenanigans
Friday – Went to lunch with co-workers to Superior Grill. Love that place! Friday after work Chris and I hung around the house for a little while. I changed out my lock screen and background on my phone…you know…important stuff…then we headed over to his parents house. We just hung out with them, ordered pizza and chilled.

Saturday – Morning started with a lovely breakfast of all things fattening. Hash browns with cheese, cheddar bay biscuits, sausage and bacon were consumed. After breakfast we hung out for a little bit then got read to head to the lake!

Chris’s dad has a boat, so he and Chris went out on the lake in the boat…and his mom and I hung around in our chairs lakeside and talked and snacked. It was overcast Saturday, so it was really nice to just chill outside. Not too hot! Since we were so close to my sister’s house and literally passed by it on the way home, we stopped by to say hello for a few minutes!

Saturday evening we went to his parents house for a family birthday dinner for his dad.

Sunday – We headed to Bargain Hunt to check it out. They just opened recently here in Birmingham and have some pretty cool stuff! I found a Fitbit for super cheap and I was so excited! (Not so much excited anymore, it turns out I got a lemon and I can’t get it working. Guess we will be going back there again real soon to return it!)

We also stopped by the Flea Market in Leeds, and had lunch at Panchos in Moody. This was our fist time there, and we will definitely by back! They food was great!

I hope everyone has a fantastic week!

Friday Five – Healthy Snacks

the Sowell life
It’s finally here! The much anticipated Friday! Yay!

I have been eating some yummy healthy snacks lately. Let’s take a look.

1. Air-popped popcorn – Much healthier than the microwave kind. I have been flavoring mine with a fresh squeezed half of a lime! It gives it the texture of butter, but much healthier. I love it!
2. Grapes –  I love some fruit! Lately, grapes have been looking wonderful at the store. I like to pluck and wash them all on Sunday night, and place in a plastic bowl with  a lid. It is a quick and easy snack all week!

3. Peaches – I love some peaches. I did live in the “Peach State” for 13 years….
They seem to be in season right now and taste delish!

4. Cottage Cheese – I have NEVER liked cottage cheese by itself before. I was making my “skinny baked ziti” on Monday, and I use cottage cheese in place of ricotta. I licked the spoon after I was done, and thought I would instantly regret it. Nope….I liked it. I have been taking the remaining cottage cheese for part of my lunch this week. It is only 90 calories and has 10 grams of protein!

5. Archer Farms Fruit Strips – I like to have one of these in the afternoons at work instead of reaching for some candy. Sweet fix for less than 100 calories? Yes, please.

What snacks are you grabbing?

Pick Up Lines

I am married, but back in my single days…I could appreciate a good pick up line. The cornier they are, the harder they make me laugh!

When I was at UWG, one of my friends and I would always go back to Gwinnett County on the weekends to work our jobs and see our families. One of our guy friends always tried to talk us into staying and partying it up one weekend with him. The weekend we decided to stay there, he was away. One night, his roommates let us into their apartment, and we broke into his room and taped pick up lines all over this walls, bed, furniture….anywhere we could! It was pretty awesome.

Here are some of my favorites! And if you are single, maybe try one of them out? You’re welcome!

Is your name Visa? Because you are everywhere I want to be.

Are you from Tennessee? Because you are the only ten I see.

Are your legs tired? Because you have been running through my mind.

Is your dad a baker? You have nice buns.

How to Behave in the General Public

In the past few weeks, I am reminded that class and manners are apparently a rare thing these days. I am starting to wonder if everyone has been brought up by a pack of wolves. Do you remember when you were little and you might have been so excited about something that you left the front door open. You parents yell out to you, you weren’t raised in a barn, Nadine…shut the door! We all had our moments. Well I think I know why my parents used that phrase.

I have a few rules that maybe….just maybe….the general public is not aware of. Now some of these rules may be unspoken, and you didn’t know. Well now you do.

  1. If you are in the parking lot and you are dilly dallying around in your car with the doors open and you notice that the person next to you have been patiently waiting to back out…don’t continue farting around. Close the damn door or get out of the way! You are not the only person on this planet and maybe, just maybe other people have places to go and things to do!
  2. You are on a 2 lane mountain road in a small town. The person in front of you is driving around the speed limit the entire time. You notice their county tag is the county you are driving through. They probably live in that area. Maybe they are driving 40 in a 40 mph zone because it is a known fact that there are cops on that road all the time that give tickets for going 42 mph. Riding their ass so bad that you are sitting in their back seat is not OK. Speeding is for the interstate or other roads where cops are not at. You know, not windy, hilly, dangerous roads. If you ride my ass for more than just a minute, I will go slow. I will go so painfully slow that you want to kill small kittens. You know why. Because I got All. Damn. Day. Thank you very much!
  3. Opposite to that rule, if you are on the interstate and the speed limit is 70, and you are going 70 or less….get the hell over and out of my way. I ain’t got time fo dat!
  4. You are at a grocery store, standing in the middle of the aisle not only blocking what you are looking at, but your cart is also blocking some items. You are indecisive and not sure what you are looking for. Someone comes up and it is clear they are on a mission. How about you step out of their way? They don’t have time for you to decided which fat free dressing you are buying, even though your entire cart is full of unhealthy shit. Just, no.
  5. You are texting and driving. We have all been there. The light turns green and maybe you missed that fact. Horns start honking. You realize, oh the light is green. Do not continue texting and not going!!!!
  6. You are in traffic, and there is a lane merging into yours. Don’t be an ass, let someone over.
  7. You are at an intersection. Traffic is a bit heavy. Do NOT block the intersection. You are inconsiderate!
  8. It’s called the thank you wave, use it.
  9. You get in line at the grocery store. They are pretty busy, and they are about to open a new lane. There have obviously been people standing there way longer than you, do NOT cut them off. Nothing pisses me off more than when I have been standing there for 10 minutes and someone walks up and then a new lane opens and they cut ahead of me as I was asked to come over by the cashier. I will say something to you. Rude!
  10. You need to get gas, pull through and don’t block other pumps.
  11. Someone holds a door open for you, the proper acknowledgement is thank you. Or at the very least a smile!
I can seriously go on for days….but these are just a few things that I have taken note of lately.
