10 House Plants With Purpose

I do not have a green thumb. Yet. But I really want to, so that has to count for something, right? I am not in to fake house plants. They collect dust, and really…who wants to clean them??? Why not have something real instead. Something that is serving a purpose other than just sitting there. Perhaps something that cleans the air and improves your quality of living!

House Plants With

I wanted to share what each plant’s purpose is, as well as some care tips that I have gathered with much research!

1. Spider Plants

While I hate the name, Spider plants absorb toxins including formaldehyde, styrene, carbon monoxide, and benzene.

Care – Spider plants do best with indirect light and well drained soil. You want to dry out the soil between waterings.

2. Aloe

Not only can Aloe be used for burns and healing of the skin, they also purify the air by absorbing formaldehyde, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Care – Aloe can be over and under watered. Your best bet is about once a week in winter and in the summer you want to saturate the soil, but let it dry between waterings. You want indirect lighting. Also note that if the leaves get brown spots, that means there are excessive chemicals in the air in your house.

3. English Ivy

Reduces mold and feces as well as removes formaldehyde.

Care – English Ivy is limber and will grow as high as you allow it. The plant should be kept in bright light, but not sun. It actually thrives in florescent lighting. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. It will be a bit dryer in the spring and fall, in the winter you want to mist it to keep it healthy.

4. Peace Lily

Reduces chemical toxins, fillers, benzene, trichloroethylene, formaldehyde alcohols, acetone, and VOCS that are in harsh cleaning products. I want to note that the Peace Lily is toxic for pets and kids, so be sure to keep it somewhere safe.

Care – This plant is low maintenance. Indirect light near a window would be best. Just not under the window. Water once per week, do not over water. You will want to mist the leaves several times each week with a spray bottle. Be sure to trim any unhealthy looking leaves.

5. Snake Plant

This plan removes toxins and is nearly indestructible! The Snake Plant would  be best suited in a bedroom, as it maintains a healthy amount of oxygen in the air.

Care – It requires little no lighting. You want to use free draining soil. Do not over water this plant, especially in the winter. Let the soil dry out between waterings.

6. Rubber Plants

These plants are great for removing formaldehyde. The leaves are toxic for pets, so be sure that the plant is left in a supervised room.

Care – The Rubber Plant requires a balance of light and shade. They thrive in a very moist, but well draining environment. You want to mist this plant regularly, and if you over water it you will know…as the leaves will turn yellow. Keep this plant away from drafty areas of the house.

7. Bamboo

The Bamboo Plant acts as a natural humidifier, according to NASA. It also removes formaldehyde.

Care – Bright, indirect sunlight would be best. You want to use distilled or bottled water and change it out once per week. Ensure there is always at least one inch of water in the vase at all times.

8. Pothos

Pothos are great for removing all indoor toxins. You want to set this somewhere high and let it cascade down. It is considered toxic for pets and children if ingested.

Care – This plant is pretty easy. It tolerates neglect and over watering. It does well in bright, indirect light as well as low light. This means it is great for bathrooms or other rooms with low light. It does not do well in direct sunlight. Let the soil dry out between waterings. If it starts to droop, it just needs water. Don’t let the leaves shrivel. Black spots mean the soil is being kept too wet and suddenly paler leaves means that it is getting too much sun.

9. Areca Palm

The Areca Palm is rated one of the best houseplants for removing indoor toxins. It also acts as a humidifier.

Care – This plant is relatively easy to care for. It loves indirect sunlight by a window.

10. Boston Fern

The Boston Fern is one of the best plants for removing air pollutants. It also acts as a humidifier.

Care – This plant can be fussy, needing more water and misting than most. You want to keep it in a cool place with high humidity and indirect light. Set pot on a tray of pebbles with water for extra humidity, especially in winter months when the heat is running. Mist the fern 1-2 times per week if needed. You want to make sure soil remains damp, so check it daily. If grown with peat moss, soak once per  month to ensure the peat moss is fully hydrated. If the leaves turn yellow, it means there is not enough humidity.

I plan on incorporating these plants throughout my home in the coming weeks. Did you know how many benefits indoor plants had? Do you have indoor plants? If so, what are your tips.

Confessions

–The roads in our neighborhood are so bad that a small child could get lost in the pot holes. That is not an exaggeration. But what concerns me most, besides the whole value of our house thing, is that every morning when I have my drink in the car…I have to hold it a certain way so it doesn’t splash out. And every morning I curse the city and the damn liar of a mayor who told us this shit was going to be fixed. Don’t spill my drink damnit! #rage

–When I earn a gift card from Swagbucks or MyPoints…I agonize over how to spend it. It’s free money and I want to get the most bang for my buck. #indecisive #ridiculous

–I didn’t work out on Tuesday. At all. Not even a little. I felt like death and my breathing was so bad that walking across a room had me winded. In fact, I basically looked liked this all day. #exhausted

–A certain fitness badass that we all know and love asked me to be friends on MyFitnessPal yesterday. I was like…

I haven’t logged food on that thing since like February and now I am going to have to be on that shit. I will be thinking twice about any bad food I shove in my face hole knowing that she can see it too!!! This is a good thing. A very good thing. #accountability #fitbitches

–My mother is the easiest person on the planet to buy gifts for. She literally loves everything. It’s so easy in fact….that I can’t make up my mind on what to get her because I have a zillion ideas and therefore have nothing yet. #thehorror #indecisive

–Things that keep me up at night…

weekend shenanigans

Weekend Shenanigans

Death is upon me this morning. Dramatic much? Chris had been sick all last week and I thought I was in the clear. Then I woke up yesterday morning with a gasp of air. My head hurt. My throat was scratchy. My nose was stuffy. Oh, awesome. So excuse me while I overdose on Emergen-C and Tylenol Severe Cold medicine over here.

This weekend was chill. Before I left for work on Friday, I had placed some Italian Chicken Sausage in the crock pot for dinner. I basically took the family recipe and traded out regular sausage for chicken to “healthy” it up. It turned out awesome! We ate that after work while we binged on 3 hours of the Law and Order SVU/Chicago Fire/Chicago PD crossover. Did anyone else catch that?

Saturday I cleaned the house and cut the back yard. I also took the hedger to the bushes out front. The bushes are not my forte. At all.

I was all

Hoping to achieve…

But instead got something like this…

Not really. Those aren’t our bushes, but it isn’t too far from ours. Oops.

After that fiasco, which may be why I am sick…my allergies were driving me crazy out there…we headed to Best Buy to go buy another media shelf for our games down stairs. It was such a beautiful day, we decided to grab some lunch at Munoz on their patio while we were out. Yum!

Sunday consisted of meal planning, grocery shopping, laundry, finishing the book I was reading, dying a little on the couch, trying out the 200 CC class in Mario Kart (hard a shit) watching Just Go With It (we have seen it about a million times and I love it every time!) and the documentary Going Clear. Basically, Scientology is crazy.

Also, Sunday looked a lot like this…

And just like that, it is time to go back to work! I have a busy week that includes hosting a food drive for The Firehouse Shelter on Wednesday evening at World of Beer. If you live in Birmingham, you should come on out! It will be fun and you will be doing something great for the community!

Linking up with Biana.

Since I loved the Milani lip products so much, and I try to save money where I can…I decided to try their blush. Love love love. I grabbed Dolce Pink. Why spend $30+ when this one is just as good for $8.99.

Allure Beauty Box, beauty

April 2015 Allure Sample Society Box

So I finally pulled the trigger on a beauty subscription box!!! I have read hundreds of posts about Ipsy and Birchbox but about 50% of the stuff people were getting, I cared nothing about. And really, who needs a new make up bag every single month?? I would rather that bag be another product instead, you know? One day I was flipping through Allure and saw that they had a Sample Society Box. I had never seen this before!!!

Before I go on, I want to say that I am writing this post on my own. I found this box in my magazine that I have a subscription to, I paid for the box on my own and am not getting compensated for this post. I just wanted to share about another subscription box that is out there because I love to talk about all things beauty!

What’s the Deal: For $15 a month, Allure sends you 5 deluxe size beauty samples, a mini magazine about the samples and a $10 off your $50 purchase on beautybar.com. I figured that was a decent deal for 5 deluxe samples!

My Initial Thoughts: I was excited to see the brands and items I got. Bumble and Bumble Invisible Hairdresser Oil has been on my list to try forever now. As was Marc Jacobs perfume and I love Benefits stuff! But then I looked at the sizes of everything. I thought these were supposed to be deluxe sized samples??? These are tiny!!! I can see pictures of previous boxes and this one looks sparse compared to others. Though, there are 6 samples instead of 5, so maybe that is how they made up for the smaller samples?

Also, I want to note that they did not include the mini magazine in my box. I am assuming this is an over site on their end. I better get one next month though, damnit! So what I am telling you about these products is from my experience, as I didn’t have much to go by other than what is written on the packages. Get your shit together, Allure.

What I Got

Bumble and Bumble Invisible Hairdresser Oil

I have had several people recommend this product to me, it has been on my list to try forever. I have the finest of fine hair. Normally I stay away from most styling products, especially if it has the word oil in it because hello….my hair doesn’t take much to get oily on its own because of how thin it is! I am here to tell you that I have used this twice and it does not make my hair oily in the least bit!! I was shocked!

Should you get it: Very impressed and I would purchase the full size. I also have confidence to go ahead and try other products from this company.

Benefits Porefessional

I love Benefit’s products, and I have received several samples of things like their mascaras, highlighters, stay put concealer, etc that I have enjoyed. This one has that silicone feeling that a lot of make up primers have. It goes on smooth, and you can use it under make up as a primer….or you can use it over your make up. I haven’t tried it over yet, but I have tried it under twice. I feel like it makes a decent primer, but I am not 100% convinced yet. My face has been acting a little crazy lately, so I dont blame the product.

Should you get it: Sephora sales a $10 sample size of this, and I would probably get that first before buying the larger one.

Marc Jacob’s Daisy Dream

This Marc Jacob scent reminds me of a sunflower perfume I used to wear in high school, only more sophisticated. I rather enjoyed it, though I don’t think I would want a big bottle of it. Chris was highly allergic to this one though, so I am going to be giving away the remainder of my sample to my mom or my sister.

Should you get it: If you like floral scented perfumes and aren’t sensitive to scents, I think this is a decent option.

Mt Sapola Lavender Chamomile Body Lotion

This lotion smells exactly like you would think, Lavender and Chamomile. It goes on smooth, absorbs quickly, and didn’t leave any weird or oily residue behind like some lotions do. The scent is just so calming, I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it is such a tiny sample that I didn’t want to put it all over my body and use it all up in one use. I have just been using it on my hands in the evenings and really do like it.

Should you get it: While I do like it, there are plenty of other lotions out there. If I saw this in the store, I would consider it for purchase but I wont be going out of my way to look for it.

Jane Iredale Rio Just Kissed Lip Plumper

Rio is a rosy brownish color, which isn’t usually my first choice but I did like it. The formula is supposed to be both moisturizing and plumping. I have a suspicion that the plumping is supposed to be subtle because I didn’t feel a tingle like I do with some lip products that claim to plump. My lips don’t really need plumping so I didn’t notice any added benefit for me there. I did like the formula though. It went on smooth and was a little hydrating, it didn’t dry me out like some.

Should you get it: I think this is a great color if you are looking for a rosy brown. Past that? There are plenty of drugstore brands that I liked better. For me it is a pass.

Illume Tonka Noir Luxury Scented Candle Tin

This candle has a really pleasant scent. I like that it is in a tin and the size would make a great travel candle. You can smell hints of vanilla, sandalwood, mandarin, rose and jasmine. For this little tin….it really works well. I lit it on our fireplace in our living room and the whole open area of my house smelled wonderful after about 10 minutes of burning. We let it burn for about 2 hours and there is still plenty left. I liked that this was a soy candle, and I googled the brand and they seem to be a decent price point.

Should you get it: I would most definitely get this scent again and try others from this brand.

Have you heard of the Allure Sample Society box? Have you tried any of the above mentioned products? Would you consider getting a subscription to this?
