weekend shenanigans

Weekend Shenanigans

Here we are, half past June like whoa. It was a HOT one down in the south this weekend. Temps hovered in the low 90’s. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, we did 🙂

Friday started off on a sad note, as I said goodbye to a dear friend of mine who is moving to Texas. We had to selfie after our last lunch date.

Friday night, Chris and I ordered some BBQ from Landmark and watched some reruns of Modern Family. It was a nice, chill evening.

Saturday morning was full of cutting the back yard. It was SO freaking hot outside at 8 am. I am convinced that grass cutting in those temperatures has to be the best cardio. Ever. After my manual labor, we headed out for a day of fun! We met up with some friends for lunch and then headed to Steel City Pops afterwards because, why not?!

We then discovered that they have never been to World of Beer. How could that be? So we decided to introduce them to the awesomeness. I enjoyed an adult “cloudy” lemonade and a grapefruit shandy. There may have been some grains in my wheat shandy, oops. YOLO?

We need to find those Crabbies Cloudy Lemonades for the beach!!! They were so good and refreshing!!!

After we split with our friends, we headed over to What’s on 2nd to check out their goods, then headed home. Since I did have a wheat beer for lunch, I ordered a salad for dinner while Chris had pizza. Keeping myself in check 🙂

Sunday morning I hit the grocery store early. When I got back, we headed over to Chris’s parents house for a little bit and then out to lunch at Munoz. When we got back, I food prepped for breakfast and lunches for the week….then we got lost in the black hole of binge watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. So good!!!!

In books -I finished Bittersweet this weekend, and started on LA Candy. Bittersweet’s review will be up at some point this week. I am really excited to *hopefully* join along in the Literary Ladies book club with Kristen, Kay and Kari. I have never participated in one before.

I have two more full weeks of work before some vacation time, so obviously these are going to be the longest weeks ever. Here’s to kicking some ass this Monday! Have a great week!

friday favorites

Friday Favorites

Favorite Song: Right now, I just really REALLY want to be at the beach. Vacation cannot come soon enough. Sail by Awolnation is one of my favorite songs to chill to ocean side. I am just going to close my eyes and pretend I am there, ok?

Favorite Delivery: Bath and Body Works did their preview sale last weekend before the Semi-Annual sale started on Monday. I grabbed up my necessities! Forever Sunshine, Secret Wonderland and Island Margarita for the win! Why do they discontinue all the good scents? With a 20% off coupon I had, each of these products were $2.40 each!!!

Favorite Outfit: So this is that dress I was talking about on Wednesday. Andrea asked that I share a picture. It is just a simple brown cotton dress from New York and Company, back when they had stuff that I actually liked. It is sort of shifty but not because this was bought in 2002-2005, before all the new shift dresses were a thing. I paired it with an old pair of Colin Stuart shoes that I absolutely love.

I have no clue where these white splatters came from? There is nothing on the mirror or the dress. I think the other window was shining some weird light on to it. So weird.

Favorite Recipe: This shrimp recipe looks delicious and you can cook it in the oven! I really want to get in to making shrimp at home, never done it before.

Spicy New Orleans Barbeque Shrimp ~ recipe originated from Pascal’s Manale located in the Garden District of New Orleans where they’ve been making barbeque shrimp since 1913.

Favorite Beauty Find: Have you guys tried the Nivea Care & Color lip stuff? I grabbed one in Sheer Coral last week at Target, and I am in love! It provides a decent color for a lip balm and it goes on so smooth and soft! Right now it is on sale for $3.59, I suggest scooping one up! They had a really pretty light pink color too. They smell just like any of the other Nivea lip products.

Love

1.Mexican Food – Chips and salsa/queso/guac, tacos, enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas. There isn’t a Mexican food that I have met that I didn’t like.

2. Dogs – It doesn’t take very long to realize that I am a crazy dog lady. I have two of my own and when I am not talking to them..because it is totally legit to carry on a conversation with your dog. Duh! I am at the humane society trying to scheme how I can take them all home and still stay married.

Mac and Gracie

3. Mario – Super Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, I love playing it all!

4. Beer – There is nothing better than a nice, cold craft beer on a hot summer day. Mmmmmm

5. Beach – No place on earth makes me happier than the beach.

6. Music – Specifically music from the 1990’s and early 2000’s. You know, when it was good! My mood can instantly go from shit to amazing with just one song.

7. Shopping – I know that a lot of you out there prefer to do most of your shopping online. I get it, it is easy and convenient and you don’t have to deal with people. But still…..there is something about walking around a retail store. Getting to touch the clothes/items, try them on, and have them instantly. Some of my favorite times are shopping with my mom.

8. Books – I love getting lost in a good book. Books make you use your imagination, something that I never want to let go.

9. Anchors – My grandfather was a Merchant Marine and every time I see an anchor, I am reminded of him.

10. TV Marathons – The perfect Sunday is spent on the couch with good food, binging on a TV show.

Hate

1. Traffic/Stupid Drivers – Traffic gives me all the RAGE!!! Yes, I have road rage. I grew up learning how to drive in Atlanta. You know what Atlanta has? Traffic. You know what else they have? Lots of freaking people, but at least they know how to drive. Do you know what Alabama has? Traffic. Do you know why Alabama has traffic? Fucking STUPID ass drivers that do the dumbest shit I have ever seen out of everywhere I have ever lived. And when I lived in Pennsylvania we had a lot of people from Ohio driving around, and even they could drive better than the fucktards we have here.

2. Freeloaders – Nothing pisses me off more than a freeloader. Sure, getting free shit is cool. When warranted. You know what isn’t cool? People that spend their lives freeloading off others. Just no.

3. Critters – I hate critters. Snakes, spiders, bugs, rodents. Just no. No no no no no.

4. Fake People – You know what is worse than a freeloader? A fake bitch. I can not stand two faced people. I have no room in my life for them.

5. Tornadoes – Nothing gets me rattled quite like the threat of a tornado. If you have been around here long enough, you know why. I take a threat of one very seriously.

6. Telemarketers – Why do these still exist? Haven’t companies realized that you don’t really gain people by calling them and harassing them?

7. Okra and fried green tomatoes – Sorry, South. I can get down with your fried pickles, your fried chicken, and all your other fried delicacies. But okra and green tomatoes? Nope. No thanks. You keep ’em. Keep your grits too.

8. Potholes – More specifically, the ones in my neighborhood that never get fixed. You have one job city. ONE JOB.

9. Animal Cruelty -If you do something bad to an animal, your punishment should be an eye for an eye. What ever you did to them should be done to you. Also, wtf is wrong with you???

10. Tuesdays – They are the longest damn day of the week. Mondays, you get to start the week off fresh. Wednesdays you are half done, Thursday is Friday eve….Tuesday? You suck.

Confessions

–Do you know what will ruin your Friday? Realizing it is only Wednesday. Like what the hell? #longestweekever

–Monday morning I was getting ready for work. I went to the guest bedroom closet to asses how much further I had to go to fit into this dress I have been holding on to for…..oh almost ten years now. It is nothing special, just a plain cotton dress, but I loved it. I haven’t worn it since 2006 or 2007. I slid it over my head and looked in the mirror and…holy shit. It fit!!! So I immediately snapped a selfie, sent it to my work out group chat  and then proceeded to walk to my car, all whilst giving my treadmill the Focker. #workingonmyfitness #fockerized

–I have a stack of magazines about 20 deep right now that I need to get through. Why do I let them pile up so bad??? #tvmarathons

–I dream of a day when my backyard looks like this. Like seriously. Why can’t this be now? #dreaming #butseriously

–I have found myself flexing in the mirror and at my desk after seeing this selfie I sent to my work out group one morning. Finally seeing some definition! #demarms #gunpermitneeded #doyouevenliftbro

–Does anyone else play the shit out of the same song over and over again? When the radio stations do it, it’s not cool. When I do it, it is totally acceptable. #onrepeat

–Conspiracy theories. Do you buy in to any of them? I was listening to a podcast the other day that talked about a few and they really make some compelling arguments. And now I sort of want to watch all the episodes of Ancient Aliens. #rabbithole #nerdalert

Promises to Keep by Jane Green

Jane Green books are usually light, easy reads. I thoroughly enjoyed Beach House, and was excited to find Promises to Keep at the thrift store. If you aren’t checking thrift stores for books, I don’t really know what you are doing for your life?? I paid $0.49 for this one!!! Ummm bargain, much?

From Goodreads

Callie Perry lights up every room she enters, and adores her settled family life in tiny Bedford, New York. Steffi is Callie’s younger sister. At thirty, she’s still a free spirit bouncing between jobs and boyfriends in Manhattan. Their long-divorced parents, Walter and Honor, share little besides their grown daughters. But when Callie receives a difficult diagnosis, the family will come together for one unforgettable and ultimately life-changing year.

This was an easy read with lovable characters and a great story line. I really liked the details of the homes that are provided. While there was some difficult topics discussed in the book, I didn’t find myself sobbing like a baby as I do with some books. Which is good, as I wasn’t really looking for a tear jerk-er or anything like that. While the book is not a recollection of Jane Green’s life, it is dedicated to her sister and that made me enjoy it even more. I feel like the sister roles and bond between Callie and Steffi are very relate-able to most people with a sister.

Bottom Line: I really enjoyed this book, but maybe not as much as The Beach House. I recommend it if you like Jane Green books, stories with lovable characters or are looking for an easy read.

Before We Met by Lucie Whitehouse

This was another thrift store find! The book was described as the London version of Gone Girl. I have never read Gone Girl, so I cannot attest to that.

From Goodreads

Hannah, independent, headstrong, and determined not to follow in the footsteps of her bitterly divorced mother, has always avoided commitment. But one hot New York summer she meets Mark Reilly, a fellow Brit, and is swept up in a love affair that changes all her ideas about what marriage might mean.

Now, living in their elegant, expensive London townhouse and adored by her fantastically successful husband, she knows she was right to let down her guard.

But when Mark does not return from a business trip to the U.S. and when the hours of waiting for him stretch into days, the foundations of Hannah’s certainty begin to crack. Why do Mark’s colleagues believe he has gone to Paris not America? Why is there no record of him at his hotel? And who is the mysterious woman who has been telephoning him over the last few weeks?

Hannah begins to dig into her husband’s life, uncovering revelations that throw into doubt everything she has ever believed about him. As her investigation leads her away from their fairytale romance into a place of violence and fear she must decide whether the secrets Mark has been keeping are designed to protect him or protect her . . .

This book was a little slow going at the very beginning. I feel like maybe the characters aren’t super developed or complex. Once I got in to the juicy part, it started to pick up for me. The last 100 pages were impossible to put down, I had to know what was going to happen. I wont give away any spoilers, but I will say that this book sure does make you think. It makes you think how well do you really know anyone? What would you do if you realized your spouse was hiding a huge secret from you?

Bottom Line: I am glad I read this book and I did enjoy it. If you are looking for a bit of a thrill without being crazy or scary, then this is probably for you.

Yes, Please! by Amy Poehler

I listened to this book through Audible. It was my first audiobook, and as someone who was a skeptical about  listening to a book…this was a great place to start. Amy herself is the reader of the book. She is so hilarious and had me roped in just after a few sentences. I felt like Amy was a friend in my car telling me stories on my way to work.

From Goodreads

In Amy Poehler’s highly anticipated first book, Yes Please, she offers up a big juicy stew of personal stories, funny bits on sex and love and friendship and parenthood and real life advice (some useful, some not so much), like when to be funny and when to be serious. Powered by Amy’s charming and hilarious, biting yet wise voice, Yes Please is a book is full of words to live by.

I really enjoyed this book. It gave little snippets of Amy’s life, both on and off camera. There were a lot of little life lessons thrown in too. I laughed out loud several times throughout the entire reading, which is a huge plus in my book. Some of my favorite quotes from the book is when Amy was talking about pregnancy and parenting and she said “Good for her, not for me.” I think that it is great to share your experiences and stuff with people, but the rude opinions and all the unsolicited advice that surrounds those topics can be summed up in her words!

She also said that instead of asking a twenty something what they want to do, why don’t we ask them what they don’t or won’t do instead. We spend so much of our twenties pondering this question, and did really anyone know exactly what they wanted? Doubtful!!!

She said that we gain super hero powers as we get older and are able to see through people. That is some serious truth right there!!! And in the last chapter she talks about how her cell phone is trying to kill her, and she is spot on! Basically this book makes me want Amy as my bff!

Bottom Line: You should absolutely read this book. Listening is even better!

Have you read any of these books? What are you reading? Right now I am reading Bittersweet. I will have a review of it up soon.
