Favorite Song: Taking it back to the days of No Doubt with Just a Girl 🙂
Favorite Meal: Laura and I tried Rowe’s Service Station on Wednesday for lunch. It’s a cute new place over in Avondale across from Melt. I ordered the black bean burger (sans bun) and Laura ordered the turkey club. We split grilled asparagus and truffle fries as our sides. And then we had a fried snickers for dessert because #YOLO. It was bite sized, it barely counted. The grilled asparagus was amazing and I probably could have just ordered a huge plate of that. Yum!!!
Favorite Podcast: I have been listening to the Jenna and Julien podcast for the last few weeks and I am really enjoying it! They just talk about random things but they did two episodes on conspiracy theories, which I always find fascinating. There was an episode on their favorite things growing up and it brought back all kinds of memories of TV shows and video games. You should check it out!
Favorite Tea: I have been back on the green tea train for a few months now, having at least 1 to 2 cups every day. I haven’t been able to find my usual, Early Grey Green Tea…so I grabbed up a Mint Green Tea last week. It is so refreshing and perfect for the summer! I don’t even mind if it gets cool sitting out because it tastes good at room temp too.
Favorite Funnies:
Does this look familiar? That look when you are outside and you think are you safe with your expressions because your glasses are obviously hiding you.
Listening – The Martian on audiobook! I just started it yesterday and I am way more in to it than I thought I would be. Kristen was right!
Reading – L.A. Candy by Lauren Conrad. Basically, I want to be LC when I grow up. Please? She has her own fashion line, a blog, books, perfect hair…I mean what more can a girl dream up?
Watching – Pretty Little Liars and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – We finished Kimmy on Tuesday night and then we watched this weeks episode of PLL last night. Like I want to know WTF Allison’s dad is saying to them at the end!!! Anyone care to speculate with me?
Working – On my fitness. Kathy messaged me yesterday and was all…let’s do these two work outs from the Nike Training app tomorrow. Let’s just say that shit was no joke.
Crafting – Something super special for a dear friend of mine. I hope I can get it done in time!!! I will share pictures after the reveal, obviously.
Drinking – Donut Shop kcups with unsweetened almond milk. Damnit do I miss my creamers!!!
Lusting – A new beach towel. How cute is this palm feathers one from Vera Bradley?
Excited for – A girls day on Saturday in lieu of a baby shower for Laura!
Counting down – For our beach trip!!! Seriously….hurry up!!! I need to be ocean side, stat!
Do you ever think, really think, about your actions when you are alone with no one to judge you? I bet you act differently, right? I thought I would share with you some of the things that I do when I am alone.
–Sing – It is a rarity that I sing in front of anyone. Yet, when I am alone…it is a freaking concert up in this bitch! The house, the car..it doesn’t matter. #britneybitch
–Dance – Literally dance like no one’s watching..because no one is. #dancelikenooneiswatching
–Try on all the clothes — I go through my closet and try on random clothes to see how they look. Usually this is choreographed with some type of dance and model walk to 90’s music. #strutyourstuff
–Talk to myself — If I am working on something, I might think out loud. Or I will audibly say my to do list. #ianswermyselftoo
–Treat the dogs like humans — Just kidding, I do this all the time. You should hear the conversations I have with them. #theyunderstandme
–Flex in the mirror — I have literally worked my ass off to finally see some definition, you better believe I flex like a bro. #doyouevenliftbro
–Indulge in guilty pleasures — I watch all the shows that Chris hates. HGTV or what’s up Kardashians. #trashtv
–Walk around in less clothes —Â Sometimes I am getting dressed and realize that I left something in the laundry room. No one is there, why bother putting everything back on? Also, fuck pants.
–Win an argument –I might not have been clever enough to make a valid point in a debate, but you better believe I replay that shit when I am alone and come up with 500 things I should have said.
–Spa time — I don’t take bubble baths or do facial masks very often. I try to squeeze them in when I am alone.
–Make food only I like — I have some “weird northern” foods that only I would enjoy eating, now is the time to make it! Also, a cheese plate is a totally acceptable dinner when I am alone.
–Play Just Dance — I look like a damn fool when I play Just Dance, so I like to do it when I know no one is going to catch me.
–Leave the bathroom door open — Why bother closing it? Besides I can hear every noise in the house better with the door open.
–Freak out — Every noise is most assuredly an intruder waiting to murder me.
First, let me enlighten you on what Bittersweet is about…
From Penguin Random House:
Suspenseful and cinematic, Bittersweet exposes the gothic underbelly of an idyllic world of privilege and an outsider’s hunger to belong.    On scholarship at a prestigious East Coast college, ordinary Mabel Dagmar is surprised to befriend her roommate, the beautiful, wild, blue-blooded Genevra Winslow. Ev invites Mabel to spend the summer at Bittersweet, her cottage on the Vermont estate where her family has been holding court for more than a century; it’s the kind of place where children twirl sparklers across the lawn during cocktail hour. Mabel falls in love with midnight skinny-dipping, the wet dog smell that lingers near the yachts, and the moneyed laughter that carries across the still lake while fireworks burst overhead. Before she knows it, she has everything she’s ever wanted: friendship, a boyfriend, access to wealth, and, most of all, for the first time in her life, the sense that she belongs.    But as Mabel becomes an insider, a terrible discovery leads to shocking violence and reveals what the Winslows may have done to keep their power intact – and what they might do to anyone who threatens them. Mabel must choose: either expose the ugliness surrounding her and face expulsion from paradise, or keep the family’s dark secrets and make Ev’s world her own.
My Thoughts:
Bittersweet was an interesting read. This has to be one of the first books that I read that I didn’t really care for the main character the whole way through. Mable Dagmar is your classic poor girl taken under the wing of her rich roommate (Ev) for a summer at Winloch. Winloch is the lake cottages that Genevra’s (Ev) family owns. Each cabin is named after a plant, Bittersweet belonging to Ev.
The author really provides a lot of details about everything, some of which could probably be left out to cut down on the books 381 pages. Each of the character’s names is different, a feeling of another era or the old money that comes with the Winslow family. Athol, Galloway, Lu, Tilde, Birch, Indo, etc. I did enjoy that the names were different.
But let’s get back to Mabel, shall we? I didn’t realize it until I was about half way though the book, but this girl is selfish. Everything that happens in the book, she always wonders how it affects her. What about the people it is happening to? Let me see if I can give some examples without giving away too much. In the beginning, Mabel wonders how the house inspection will go and whether or not she will get to stay at Winloch or have to go to her aunt’s for the summer. Innocent enough. But then, Ev has a certain condition, Mabel instantly gets upset about what will happen to her now. She worries about how others’ troubles will change things for her. There was even a line about how the tree tops rubbed against each other making a creepy sound as if they were telling secrets…ABOUT HER. Maybe it is just her being a teenager.
There are so many twists and turns in the book and you learn lots of Winslow family politics. So many secrets, lies, betrayals. So this isn’t a light, fluffy book. I liked the change up from my norm. It was really quite an interesting read. The theme of the book would be dangerous desire.
Bottom Line: I enjoyed reading this book. I was looking for something that I might not normally grab for, and this delivered. With all the twists and turns in the book, it kept me interested the entire way through. Though the main character wasn’t always likeable for me, I certainly empathized with her and enjoyed how the book ended.

I received Bittersweet from Blogging for Books in exchange for my review. All my opinions are of my own.
