Books Lately

I read some really great books this month! Joining the book challenge and the book club has me really focused. If you click the title of the book, it will take you to Goodreads where you can add the book to your list and see what it is about.

Now as I do my happy dance because I love discussing books…

The Martian by Andy Weir

Words cannot describe my love for this book. And trust me, I was super skeptical when I read about what this book was about. I even saw others write about how the math and science talk was a little  hard to get through but they still loved it and I thought…no….there is no way this is for me. But Kristen recommended the audio book to me and I trust her tastes dearly. I became obsessed with the story. So much so that I made Laura start listening to it, and I even told two of my co-workers that they had to listen to it too. This is hands down the best book I have read this  year.

The first line will hook you right in.

Bottom Line – Listen to this immediately!

Rescue Road by Peter Zheutlin

Sometimes I wonder if there is any humanity left in this world, and then I read a book like Rescue Road.  I love dogs and want to save them all. Talk about pulling at my heart strings. This book follows a man who drives a rescue trailer from Ohio, down south to gather dogs from shelters and rescues and brings them back up north to be adopted. You get to hear about his story, along with three rescue groups who are doing amazing things. You wouldn’t believe the amount of people who touch the life of a dog before they find their forever home. All the nameless angels. It really is amazing.

My favorite quote from this book is “As the miles melt away so do a lifetime of bad memories” – Greg Mahle

Bottom Line – I cried, I smiled, and then I cried some more. If you are an animal lover in the least bit, this book is for you.

I  received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen

This is the book club book. It was an easy, but enjoyable YA read. I loved the story line and most of the characters. I also loved that the characters in this book grow as time goes on.  I felt like Sydney’s guilt and loneliness were well executed throughout this book.

Some of the things that I didn’t like? I felt like there were several plot lines that didn’t really go anywhere or were abandoned.  The Mariposa girl that was flirting with Mac. The whole creepy thing with Ames could have been worked out more. I wanted more from the carrousel that is on the front cover of the book. And Sydney’s obsession with David Ibarra. I was left wanting a little more, especially with the David plot line.

One of my favorite quotes in this book was “The future is one thing that could never be broken.”

Bottom Line – This was a great read. Nothing mind blowing, but I am glad I got the chance to read it and would recommend it.

Bossypants by Tina Fey

I did this one via audiobook.  Tina is hilarious and I really liked this book. The combination of sarcasm, humor, stories, and real life lessons was enjoyable.

Some of my favorite life lessons from the book include how improv is a lot like real life, how parents should want to instill the gift of fear and anxiety in their children for discipline purposes, to wear what the fashion designers are wearing…not what they tell you to wear. And for woman in the work place, if someone is giving you a hard time, ask yourself “Is this person in between me and what I want to do? If not, ignore them.”

Bottom Line – If you like Tina Fey, SNL, or memoirs in general, then this book is for you! I recommend audiobook for books like this, but to each their own.

The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

To be honest, I had no clue what this book was going to be about. I remember seeing a few bloggers reviewing it and they always rated it really high, so I figured why not?! Basically, this book is just as the title says, it is snippets of AJ Fikry’s life. Fikry owns a bookstore and he is a bit of an eccentric guy who is living a depressing life after loosing his wife. One day his life changes when something is left behind for him. Now he has the will to want to be happy.

Favorite quotes and take aways from this book would be:

You learn everything about a person with the question – what is your favorite book?

Most people’s problems would be solved if they would only give more things a chance.

Things we respond to at twenty are not necessarily the things we respond to at forty and vice versa.

Bottom Line – Absolutely read this book! I loved it!

I am currently reading The Closer You Come by Gina Showalter and will have a review for it up soon. Have you read any good books lately? What are you reading now?

weekend shenanigans

Weekend Shenanigans

Hey there middle of July! What??? I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend!! My weekend started out with a quiet night in on Friday. We watched some New Girl and I finished reading The Storied Life of AJ Fikry, which I will talk about tomorrow for the Show Us Your Books link up! Yay!!! I love book link up day 🙂

Since we were out of town last weekend, I had to cut the entire yard this weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday morning I got up early and sweat to death outside cutting that damn grass. So. Hot. SO HOT! I am so ready for cooler temps.

Other than that, Chris and I camped out at World of Beer most the day Saturday. I got to try two new to me beers, Unibroue Ephemere Pear and Woodchuck’s Oopsy Daisy Chamomile. Yes. Chamomile beer. It was freaking delicious!!! We told our bartender the Beer is My Friend glass that they brought out for my Oopsy Daisy was coming home with us. And it did.

World of Beer

My new Tea With Mrs Potts polish can be seen above. If you live Beauty and the Beast (or Little Mermaid, Milan, and Pochahontas) as much as I do…head to Walgreens for the Orly collection!!!

I have started reading (and half way through) Closer to You and we have made it to season 4 of New Girl last night, so clearly a productive weekend all around! I managed to stay off the Nordstrom Anniversary sale, for now. Also a huge accomplishment. I hope everyone has a great week!!!

beauty, friday favorites

Friday Favorites

Favorite Song: At the beach, we listened to mostly country music by the pool since it is more family friendly. Take Your Time by Sam Hunt played several times and reminds me of the beach now!

Favorite Snacks: My mom was in PA visiting family while I was at the beach. She was kind enough to bring my sister and I back some of our favorite foods that cannot be found down south! Luckily, Chris enjoys all of these things as well so I won’t be consuming them all by myself. They aren’t exactly clean or diet friendly…but YOLO. Snyder of Berlin BBQ chips, Dellalo’s Pepperoni Cheese and Smiley Cookies from Eat ‘n Park. It’s the little things in life, you guys. Or in my Pittsburgh accent, yunz!

Favorite Delivery: My sister met up with me Monday morning to give me my aforementioned “northern food” and some fresh veggies from her garden! Look how big her squash and zucchini are! And those blueberries? Damn those berries are SO GOOD!

She also brought me a jar of pickled banana peppers and pickled jalapenos. I need her to teach me her ways!!! This has to be in my genes, right?

Favorite Workout: This would be a great work out to squeeze in with whatever you are currently doing to get those arms tank top ready!

After following this 21-day arm plan, not only will your arms look toned — you'll also be stronger.

Favorite Lunch: While I was grocery shopping on Monday, I decided to grab a small Greek salad and Brown Rice Veggie Tempura Sushi from Publix. Yum!!!!! Have you ever had Publix sushi before? I was skeptical for far too long, obviously.

Favorite Shampoo: I wanted to try a natural shampoo and while I was walking around Target I stumbled upon gud! This is a Burt’s Bees brand and it was on sale for under $6 this week! This smells amazing!!! Pear and acai berry goes well together. Pearanormal Activity – who doesn’t love a play on words, am I right?? Not only does this smell amazing, my hair felt super clean after using it.

Favorite Beauty Find: Also on sale this week at Target were the Fast Fix items from Alba Botanica. They were on sale for $4.49 PLUS Cartwheel had a coupon as well, so these rang up $4.04 each! One is for puffy eyes and the other is for pimple spot treatment. The puffy eyes worked instantly for me. I really like it! The spot treatment was tinted which I liked. It isn’t a perfect tint for me, but I don’t care because it is under my make up so you can’t tell. It seems to be drying out my trouble areas. It has only been a few days…but for $4….me likey.

thoughts

Tea For Thoughts

My mind is still a little scattered as I try to get back in to adulting after vacation. Fun times, fun times.

–Speaking of fun times, I feel like there are never enough hours in the day to get all my reading in!!! I just keep adding more and more books to my to-read list. I downloaded a few to my iPad yesterday that were free through this deal site my SIL introduced me to. My first thought was….how am I going to fit all these in along with my summer reading challenge list? I am sure I will!

–Getting back in to the swing of things also means getting back to stricter eating and working out again. My lower back is still a little sore, so I have been going easy this week with two runs and some lighter lifting. Next week I hope to be back to full force!!!

–The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is open today for debit and credit card holders. Oh, how there are so many pretty things that I want!!! Kate Spade has a super cute purse marked down, the Michael Kors sandals I have been swooning over all summer are under $100 right now and I have seen so many people boast about the Zella active line and I would love to try a pair of their leggings. Not good for the wallet folks, not good at all. I am going to try to avoid stalking the sale at all costs.

–My week day routine at work always consists of at least one to two cups of tea per day. I love the many benefits of tea including antioxidants, free radicals, metabolism boosting properties, stress relief, and well if I am being honest…it keeps me from wanting snacks during the day. I consider tea my “snack time.” I usually grab a cup around 10:30 am when I start thinking about lunch, and then again around 2:30-3:00 pm to break up my afternoon and have a little pick me up.

One day, I was scrolling through my Twitter account and I saw Tea Drift. I realized they were a new company so I went to check out their site. They carry an expansive line of loose leaf teas for a great price! One of my hesitations when I go to the store, is that the loose leaf teas are $10-$20 for a whole lot of one flavor. I like to switch it up all the time so I don’t get burnt out, you know?

I sort of jokingly tweeted at them that I would blog for tea and well….I received this in the mail a few short days later!

You guys, they have certainly found a new customer in me!! These flavors they sent me were absolutely amazing. What I liked most, is that they have tea bags for purchase so you don’t have all this loose tea floating around in your water. Because let’s be honest…a lot of the stainless steel strainer looking tea items leave behind a lot of floaters. With this, you just scoop a tablespoon or two of the tea into a bag and let it seep in hot water for 3-7 minutes.

Their website is awesome because if you click on a particular tea, it gives you all the benefits of that specific one. You can certainly sell me on benefits!

Right now, Tea Drift is offering a free sample with any order over $10. Their tea of the month is Chocolate Mint, which is 25% off. I have never had chocolate mint tea and I am so intrigued! If you are a tea drinker, I highly encourage you to check them out.

I did receive a free sample of tea, but this is my honest opinion.

You guys know I don’t talk about stuff that I do not believe in!

confessions

Confessions

–Getting back in the swing of things after vacation is hard. Really hard. #reality

–Stupid people make me rage lately. While scrolling through my news feed (you already know this is going to be ridiculous) some girl posted that she was so distraught about the divorce of Bennifer. Like seriously? That is what you have to be sad about? What about the shit storm that is going on over in Greece? Or the homeless veterans you pass on your way to work every morning? Or China’s economy. Let’s put down the US Weekly folks. #getalife

–Speaking of rage, I can’t believe how offended people are getting about EVERYTHING these days. You can’t say or do anything anymore. #noteverythingisaboutyou

–It hurts that Gracie ignored me when I picked them up from boarding on Monday. Mac was so excited to see me! He went nuts and jumped in to my arms. My little Gracie? She walked straight past me to the door and out to the car. I didn’t get so much as a tail wag. The woman who was standing next to me waiting for her dog to come out was like “Oh wow, she is mad!!!” Sigh. The pug in her shows more often than not. Usually she is beside herself when she sees me and starts whimpering out of excitement and can’t run to me fast enough. #justloveme

–I decided I would rather have water than an adult beverage that I don’t love. #beersnob

–When I met up with my sister the other day, I made a comment about how I tanned while at the beach. Tracy looks at me, laughs and says “That’s a tan?”  #rude #irishskin #pastyisthenewsexy

–For the first time in my adult life, I have a library card! I joined my local library on Monday when I had off. #thingswedowithafreeweekday #iwanttoreadallthebooks

I'm sure you'll think I'm talking about you, like with the jealousy quotes. Funny thing was none of them were directed at you, but since the shoe seems to fit so well, feel free to rock it :-)
