Weekend Shenanigans – Blog Switch Edition

Well hello there. I hope everyone had a great weekend! I spent some time this weekend transferring my blog from Blogger to WordPress! I also have a new domain all to myself. Exciting things people! My husband is so sweet and took the time to help me do everything. There is a lot of debate about which is better, Blogger or WordPress. I think they both have their pros and cons. My main reason for making the switch is that the content of your blog on WordPress is your very own if you are hosting it and have your own domain. In Blogger, all of your content is Blogger’s/Googles. Also, I have read horror stories about people losing their blogs on Blogger for different reasons. I didn’t want to fall victim to that! So, if things look a little wonky on here for awhile, please excuse the mess! I am trying to get used to everything and it has been trial and error!

This weekend was great. We didn’t really have any plans, which I love! Friday night we stayed in, made pizza and just hung around. Chris was getting his music ready for the Halloween party next weekend and I played around with Photoshop for a little while and read some Harry Potter, I have made it to book 5!

Saturday we woke up and ordered some breakfast from Crazy Horse and took it home. It was wonderful. It is a cute little mom/pop restaurant in Argo and their prices are SUPER reasonable. We ate for half the price we would have had we gone to Waffle House or Cracke Barrel and the food was great! After breakfast I did some cleaning and got ready. The rest of Saturday was all about football! Chris and I went and hung out with his dad and we watched a lot of games. Upset Saturday in the SEC! I am sad that Georgia lost, but I was so happy that Alabama won, Old Miss took down LSWHO, FSU killed Clemson, Tennessee is still going strong beating South Carolina and I cant believe I am going to say this…but I was so happy that Auburn beat Texas A&M!!!!  Suck on that Johnny Football! You have never seen 3 Alabama fans jump up and down at the end of an Auburn game hoping they win! What a great weekend for football with some really exciting games!!!

Sunday we did our meal planning and I headed off to the grocery store for the week. When I got home, we made lunch and watched the first three episodes of Betrayal. So far, the show is pretty good. Have you seen it yet? After that, we made my blog switch and then had dinner and watched a movie.

I am pretty proud of myself this weekend as far as eating goes. I only splurged at lunch both days. Last night for dinner I had a salad. I made my fruit dip again this week for a snack and am taking pita with hummus and either soup or a salad every day for lunch.

I hope everyone has a fantastic week!

I have never really even wanted to give the books a try but one day I decided I wanted to get back into reading again and I like series books because I become attached to characters and am sad when books are done so quickly, so I thought what better than to start with a series of 8 books?! I think I like them because they are so out of the norm and in a completely different world. I liked The Hunger Games and Twilight and so I think I just like the not normal.

Oooh, when you get the kinks ironed out, will you and your husband write a how to on switching? I have heard it’s the thing to do, but I refuse to pay someone and I haven’t seen a good tutorial that gives me faith in DIYing yet! So far, everything looks great. A bunch of your old posts did show up in my bloglovin but if that’s the worst that happens, then I would say it was a smooth move!

I, like you, refused to pay someone to do this for me. My husband mentioned a couple times “Why don’t you just pay a designer and get what you want.” But I feel much more accomplished that it was done without having to go to someone else. Granted, Chris did A LOT of the work for me. I watched him though, and he had me hit the button that made the switch! It really isn’t that bad, and I might write a post on what all I did. It only took a few minutes for the actual transfer. We had my domain name already purchased, and were working on the design for about a week to make sure most of it was done. You do have to pay to have someone host your site for you. There are a lot of companies out there, but I am lucky enough that Chris designs and hosts websites on his own server, and so he is hosting mine for me.

    Things are looking good!

Did all of your “old” content transfer over easily or did you have to manually import it?

Thank you! There was a plug in for WordPress that actually imports your Blogger posts and comments for you. There were a few little hiccups, like all my drafts published and I had to go back and make them “drafts” again, but all in all it was smooth.

Since I’m newish to blogging, my domain is the free WordPress version. I’ve already gotten involved enough that I will probably buy my domain at some point, but I wanted to make sure blogging was something I would stick to before spending the money.

Before my current blog, I had one just for book reviews on Blogger. Then, I also heard the same stories you did. I heard Google was cracking down on content and that some blogs had been deleted just for using the word lesbian and other rather tame words. Since I sometimes talk about politics and am passionate about gender rights, I knew I might use similar words on my blog some day. I wasn’t going to risk losing all my content for something so simple. That’s how I ended up on WordPress.

Someday, I may take the leap and transfer to a wordpress.org web domain instead of wordpress.com. I want to learn more about the general blogging world first, though.

It is certainly more involved when you are purchasing your own domain and hosting your site yourself. I am celebrating my one year blogiversary this week and decided since I have made my blog a “hobby” for a year that it was time to do it! It isn’t hard to switch over and I think it is worth it if you plan to continue blogging and enjoy it!

I haven’t heard of Betrayal, I will have to check it out! I love the HP series, and the books are so much better than the movies too. Hope you enjoy all of them! I remember back in the day cancelling plans with people because I didn’t want to stop reading! Hehe!

p.s. your new blog looks great! Glad I can finally see it. My office is horrible about blocking sites. They even block work related sites sometimes, so frustrating!

It’s got me thinking about getting me a new design!
