Songs of Summer

Every year there seems to be the “song of summer.” The song that is played to death by all the top radio stations, the song that you most likely remember when you think back to that summer. Even if it isn’t the song you would pick to call your summer song, it is inevitably “the Song.” (Hello, Blurred Lines, how I hate thee.)

While I was in my car the other day, and heard Iggy’s “Fancy” for the 3rd time in the same hour…it got me thinking what song would be “the” summer of 2014 hit. Will it be something we have already heard, like Fancy? Or will it be a new song that is about to drop in the next few weeks?

Some of my favorite summer songs might now be the most traditional. When I think of the summer after my senior year of college, I can hear Good Charlotte, Sum 41 and Newfound Glory. One year when I was in Destin for a week, we listened the the Matt Nathanson “Some Mad Hope” CD the entire trip, so anytime I hear any song off that album I immediately think of Destin. Last summer on one of our beach trips with my SIL “I Love It (I Don’t Care)” came on when we were in the condo and she deemed it the beach trip song, and so it was! Every time I hear that song I immediately think of our relaxing trips in Gulf Shores.

Then I thought, how fun would it be to go back and look up the songs of summer for the past 25 years!? I think I might make a playlist with these songs just for fun! I love you Spotify!

This list is the most played/requested songs for their respective summers.

1989: “Right Here Waiting,” Richard Marx

1990: “Vision Of Love,” Mariah Carey

1991: “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You,” Bryan Adams

1992: “Baby Got Back,” Sir Mix-A-Lott

1994: “I Swear,” All-4-One

1995: “Waterfalls,” TLC

1996: “Macarena,” Los de Rio

1997: “I’ll Be Missing You,” Puff Daddy

1998: “The Boy Is Mine,” Brandy and Monica

1999: “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” Ricky Martin

2000: “It’s Gonna Be Me,” ‘N Sync

2001: “Lady Marmalade,” Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, and Pink

2002: “Hot In Herre,” Nelly

2003: “Crazy In Love,” Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z

2004: “Yeah,” Usher

2005: “We Belong Together,” Mariah Carey

2006: “Promiscuous,” Nelly Furtado feat. Timbaland

2007: “Umbrella,” Rihanna feat. Jay-Z

2008: “I Kissed A Girl,” Katy Perry

2009: “I Gotta Feeling,” Black Eyed Peas

2010: “California Gurls,” Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg

2011: “Party Rock Anthem”  LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock

Now I ask you, what is the song(s) you think about most when you think of summer?

94-present: ABSOLUTELY. For me, Hanson’s “Penny & Me” is my ultimate summer hit. Good times listening to that song, on repeat.

Actually, their entire 04 Underneath album is my summer jam.

Most of my summer song memories are tied to when I was a kid at sleep away camp so they probably aren’t on the list. They’re mostly songs that had a special meaning during that summer for whatever reason, like our songs for color war (Alphaville’s “Forever Young” or Billy Joel’s “This is the Time”) and for some reason, BNL’s One Week is totally a summer song for me.

The Atari’s cover of “Boys of Summer” (and Don Henley’s original) is one of my summer favorites. I think I’ll use that tomorrow for my favorites post.

I love summer songs, but sometimes they are overplayed that I get annoyed with them lol..
I think the one that I remember the most is “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas!! When ever I hear that song it takes me back to that summer.. I don’t, I get nostalgic. hahah..

I just did a similar post to this on my blog the other day, on my favorite songs right now.. lol.

Oh man, I just flashbacked through all of those summers and all of those songs. That would be an epic playlist.. just saying.

Today, over by me, is TWIT Thursday.. come check it out!!!

Oh, for me.. the song I think of, when I think of summer.. honestly.. is either Journey’s “Don’t Stop” or “Sweet Caroline”… mostly because I spent one whole summer following this cheesy cover band, and screaming those songs on the top of my lungs! Not proud.. but not ashamed.. It was good times!

You know I love the Matt Nathanson mention! The summer of Promisucous is the first summer Andrew and I dated, I changed radio jobs, and really started to grow up… and stupid California Girls and Katy’s boobs were everywhere the summer I got married. Lots of memories!
