Books Lately

It is book day once again!!! One of my favorite days of the month 🙂 I think I read more books this month than any other month ever!!! Let’s jump in, shall we? I am going to go ahead and give you a spoiler now…I loved all the books I read this month!

Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty

Three Wishes

My love for Moriarty only grows deeper with each novel that I read. This book follows along a set of triplets in their 33rd year of life. There are ups and downs and laughs along the way. You really get to see what life is like as a multiple and see how different their personalities can be.

Bottom Line: Read it!!! I did this through audible. People complained about this narrator and while she is no Caroline Lee or Tamara Lovatt-Smith….once you get used to her it is completely fine and enjoyable.

Life’s a Beach (Hawaii Heat #1) by Jamie K Schmidt

Life's a Beach (Hawaii Heat, #1)

Amelia uses her savings to plan a surprise Hawaii vacation for her and her boyfriend. At the last minute, her boss tells her she cant go and she gets fired. When she comes home to surprise him, she finds her boyfriend in bed with her favorite barista! She decides to take her fortune-telling aunt to Hawaii instead and instantly clicks with Dude. A stoner  snorkel instructor, or so he portrays to her. Little does Amelia know that Dude is actually the super rich owner of the resort she is staying at. Will she still feel the same way once she realizes who Dude really is?

The only thing I didn’t like about this book is that I felt like the ending is a little rushed.

Bottom Line: Read it! If you are looking for a quick and hot love story with a focus on the hospitality business and Hawaii thrown in, this is for you!

*I was provided a copy of Life’s a Beach by the publisher and author via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*

The Things We Keep by Sally Hepworth

25663807

I was instantly drawn to this book when I read the synopsis. It is about Anna, who is 38 with Alzheimer’s and moves into an assisted living facility where almost exclusively, seniors live. She meets Luke, a 41 year old with a similar condition as her. Then there is Eve, the single mom who “wastes” her culinary skills to take a job at Rosalind House so that she can keep her daughter Clementine in the same school district. And poor Clementine. She is being bullied at school.

This book actually tells the story in first person from all three female characters: Anna, Eve and Clementine. It will tell you at the start of the chapter the view which you are reading from.

I actually deal with senior living facilities on a daily basis in my line of work, so that is what first inspired me to read this book. Alzheimer’s is one scary disease, if you have ever known anyone to have this…you know how hard it will inevitably be.

Favorite quote: “You don’t waste time with regrets. In the end, you just remember the moments of joy. When all is said and done, those are the things we keep.”

Bottom Line: Read it!! This book will pull a little at your heart strings and is a great reminder to enjoy the little moments.

Why Not Me by Mindy Kaling

Why Not Me?

I really loved listening to Mindy’s first book because it was like one long episode of the Mindy Project. Or like Mindy was riding along in my car telling me stories. This book was no different. I related to her when she talked about spending most of her life getting people to like her. I laughed through her beauty routine. And well, the way she described sorority’s and who she would cast in a movie about them was pretty spot on. Or at least for my school it was. I liked the stories she shared about a guy that she dated. And I related to her about some struggles of body image and eating.

I absolutely hated the fake emails of her being a teacher back in 2005. It was all made up, I didn’t understand the point and it went on a bit too long for my liking.

Bottom Line: If you liked the first book or The Mindy Project, then you would probably enjoy this book. I liked the first one better, but this one was still enjoyable to listen to.

Food: A Love Story by Jim Gaffigan

20697471

Hot pocket! Even if you don’t know anything about Jim Gaffigan, you have had to have heard his hot pocket skit. If you haven’t, go you tube it and come back. I will wait…

Ok, now that you are laughing, you understand this book better!

In the first part of the book, Gaffigan talks about food around difference regions of the country. I had to relate to him on his feelings about things like oysters. I am not a fan. And his spill on grits? I died laughing. Grits = gross! He also talks about how we as a country have an unhealthy relationship with food. How we are constantly eating and how food is a social activity. Isn’t that the truth?

I listened to this book while doing Whole 30 and I gotta say, there were a few sections when I would have killed to have a burger, donut, cheesecake or just anything unhealthy. I was thinking…why???? Why did I listen to this when I can’t eat any of it? It was probably for the best! I laughed out loud more times than I could count.

Bottom Line: I find Jim Gaffigan’s comedic approach on food to be refreshing and enjoyable to listen to. We spend so much time on reading articles and watching documentaries on what not to do, it is nice to laugh about some of these problems.

The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty

The Last Anniversary

I basically want to move to Scribbly Gum Island! Sophie Honeywell inherits a beautiful house from her ex almost fiance Thomas’s Aunt Connie when she passes away. Then there is the whole Monroe Baby mystery. What ever did happen to Alice and Jack?? When Sophie moves to the island, she gets closer with the whole family and realizes that she can create her own fairy tale ending.

I loved listening to this book. I love how much depth Moriarty gives her characters and this book goes deep.

Bottom Line: Loved this one, I would suggest reading it if you are a Moriarty fan!!

Taste by Tracy Ewens

Taste (A Love Story #3)

I absolutely adored this book! You meet Kara, a US Senator’s daughter who is constantly in the spotlight of the media…and her critical mother’s eye. She has kept her true self so hidden from the world that she almost feels she has lost who she is. Somehow she became a food critic for an LA paper.

Then you have Logan Rye who grew up on a farm and has opened a trendy farm to table restaurant in LA.

Kara and Logan met in Paris back when they were in college. Logan knew Kara as Winnie Parker then and they had the perfect relationship blooming. That was until Kara’s parents sent someone to come bring her back home. Kara left Logan in Paris and broke both of their hearts.

Kara is now given the task of doing a three part write up on Logan’s new restaurant. Will their love be given a second chance?

This book was considered Women’s Fiction/Romance. This isn’t some fast pace romance book where the characters are constantly in bed. This is much more about the struggles these two have to overcome and in their relationship as well as with their own selves. This is a love story that builds and builds over time. So much so that I felt there was a spot or two where the book dragged a little, but it was more to build depth to these characters.

Bottom Line: If you love a book about second chances, then check this one out! I loved it!

Other books I read this month

Happy Cooking by Giada De Laurentiis

Currently Reading:

Stiff by Mary Roach via Audiobook

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

The Forgotten Room by Karen White, Beatriz William and Lauren Willig

The Forgotten Room

I do have a question for those of you who are reading my book post today. What is your favorite format to read book reviews like this? Do you want a synopsis of what the book was about and my opinion…just my opinion. A few short lines about each? Just curious. For the books I review for Netgalley and Blogging for Books I need to go a  little more in depth but for the books I read on my own I wasn’t sure what everyone prefers.

Read anything good lately?

I like your current format although I’ve noticed everyone does it a little differently!! As long as I can easily read a title, author and an approximate rating (i.e. your bottom line part). I also love when bloggers link to Goodreads instead of Amazon because I can easily add it to my goodreads account if I want to (although I understand the affiliate aspect of the Amazon link – but it doesn’t help me anyway because I’m in Canada :)) The two Moriarty books you read are some of my last ones left by her…I love her writing 🙂

Girl you are a reading machine!! Love it!! One day when all these kids are out of the house I’ll have much more time to read and I cannot wait, ha!!! 😉 I get in one or two a month and also finished up three wishes last month but I yearn for more, ha ha. Moriarty is one of my favs and boys does that Life’s A Beach look intriguing! 😉 Have an awesome day!!

well, you do whatever, but i always skip details about the book and go straight to the opinion. i hate when people ‘review’ books and don’t give their opinion, just the synopsis. i can read that on goodreads lol. i don’t provide any more info on my netgalley books, just my opinion. but you do whatever you want of course.

i am currently reading the forgotten room as well! high five. you liking it so far?

there is a book… with a character by the name of Dude?! haha. i can’t wait to read the other Liane Moriarty books. I’m trying to space them out though. I just got a copy of why not me, i am interested to read it because i listened to her first one, so i am going to see if i like or dislike this one more with actually reading it rather than listening.

I loved both of those Liane Moriarty books I’m def adding The Things We Keep to my list, sounds so good!

I think I’m the only person who hasn’t read Moriarty…one day I’ll get there. The Things We Keep sounds REALLY good, may have to add that one to the TBR. Pretty sure Kaling’s book will be my audiobook for the month, really enjoyed her first one.

I need this Moriarty books in my life, I have them on my list but there are so many books to read!! I got my mom What Alice Forgot for her birthday last month and I’m waiting to see what she thinks.

  • Reply Lauren February 9, 2016 at 10:13 am

I liked Three Wishes, but it was probably my least favorite of all the Moriarty books I’ve read (I thought the sisters were a bit ridiculous to each other). I want to read The Last Anniversary, though. I actually own Food: A Love Story because it’s a great title and I like Jim Gaffigan, but I don’t know, his jokes come across a little flat for me, at least in writing. I can’t finish it especially because it makes me so hungry!

  • Reply Carly February 9, 2016 at 10:23 am

You are a reading machine! I read Mindy’s book and loved it, but I also love her! I’ve only read Little Big Lies, I need to get in on the other Moriarty books!

  • Reply Rebecca Jo February 9, 2016 at 10:31 am

I’m going to Amazon right now for The Things we Keep… & that Moriarty book about the triplets. I love her with every book I read of hers too.

loved that you read so much this month! i’m trying to get through my book now (Saturn Run) but work is so crazy busy that i hardly have time to sit and read.

re: book post format – i like it when bloggers tell me their thoughts on why they liked/hated it with a rating and then leave a link to goodreads.

  • Reply Jana @ Jana Says February 9, 2016 at 11:00 am

I really enjoy Liane Moriarty and I’m saving up some more of her books for a few months from now when I need to detox from the heavy stuff I’m currently reading.

I like Jim Gaffigan as a comedian but I just can’t bring myself to read his books. Can’t really figure out why.

  • Reply Rach @ This Italian Family February 9, 2016 at 11:03 am

My father-in-law has early on-set vascular dementia so The Things We Keep sounds really interesting to me! Thanks for the recommendations!

  • Reply alyssa February 9, 2016 at 11:06 am

I loved Mindy’s book too, but I agree. The emails chapter went on a bit too long and I stopped paying attention during it. The rest was so perfectly Mindy though!

  • Reply SMD @ Life According to Steph February 9, 2016 at 11:15 am

I never read anyone’s synopsis when they include them. If I want a synopsis, I read it on Goodreads or Amazon (so a link to either is good). I want to know if you liked the book and why or if you didn’t like it, why.

  • Reply Laura @ Life with Lolo February 9, 2016 at 11:16 am

I think I need to jump on the Moriarty train! Adding these to my list. Also, I don’t think I mentioned yesterday, I’m loving the new blog look!

  • Reply Ashley @ The Wandering Weekenders February 9, 2016 at 11:25 am

I loved Three Wishes too! I loved getting to know the sisters better and their different personalities, but I also loved that Liane dove into some pretty deep issues. I still need to read Three Wishes, and by the sounds of it, I’m going to love it! Life’s A Beach sounds so adorable! I would love to read a book that can take me back to Hawaii!

  • Reply Mattie February 9, 2016 at 11:48 am

I neeeed to read Jim Gaffigan’s book. He cracks me up. I cry laughing watching his specials, and I saw him live once too! The Last Anniversary is at the top of my Moriarty books! It’s that and What Alice Forgot. I have to read that Sally Hepworth book. I LOVED The Secrets of Midwives. My grandma also had Alzheimer’s so I relate to that (plus I loved Still Alice).

  • Reply Amy @ Getz Girl on Fire February 9, 2016 at 3:06 pm

I don’t know any of these books but they all seem like my style . . . I just really need more time to read, among other things! It’s such a relaxing hobby! And confession – I’ve never actually listened to an audio book. I’m always jamming out to my tunes in the car!

  • Reply Emily @ Martinis & Bikinis February 9, 2016 at 3:34 pm

You probably already know that I’m not a big reader but I could probably get through with one of Mindy’s book. I love her!

  • Reply Jackie February 9, 2016 at 4:15 pm

I think you are one of the people that got me into Liane Moriarty. I just remember lots of people blogging about her last year. So thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I don’t know why anyone would hate on her audiobooks. I always find them to be some of the best ones. I just want to walk around talking like Gemma does.

  • Reply Dani February 9, 2016 at 5:01 pm

If I’m truly interested in a book, I’ll click on the Goodreads link to read the official synopsis and click on the wonderful “Want to Read” button. I like a few lines of what you thought, and I’m a big fan of your bottom line. I absolutely love Mindy and have the next one on my shelf! Good to know that it’s still true to her form. I’ve only read one other Liane Moriarty book, but I think The Last Anniversary sounds right up my alley!

  • Reply Erin @ TexErin-in-SydneyLand February 9, 2016 at 5:22 pm

Does Liane Moriarty know you are her biggest fan? She should. She should acknowledge you 🙂 As for format, I’m okay with how anyone wants to present their books. But, for me, I guess I want it the way I write mine (duh, because I’m so cool): a link to goodreads, so I can easily read the synopsis, add it, read other reviews, etc., and your opinion of the book. I like pictures too because I’m visual as well. Hope that helps!

  • Reply Lindsay February 9, 2016 at 5:42 pm

I need book ideas for the reading challenge I’m doing, so thank you! I am already behind which is not shocking at all. Can’t wait to check these out! By the way, you are stronger than I for listening to a book about food while doing Whole30!

  • Reply Lauren @ Oh Hey! I Like That! February 9, 2016 at 6:00 pm

I was a HUGE fan of “Food: A Love Story”! When Gaffigan talks about how no one really likes kale, I was cracking up!

  • Reply Tanya @ A Mindful Migration February 10, 2016 at 12:50 pm

All the books look so great – I am definitely adding the Moriarty books to my list and The Things We Keep. I love the quote from the book you shared as it sums up how I feel about life too. I like your current format. I don’t think you need to add a separate synopsis section because you do share what the book is about in your review. I get enough detail to know whether it is something that I’d enjoy or not.

  • Reply Kay R. February 10, 2016 at 7:22 pm

Ive been wanting to read three wishes. You may have convinced me!

  • Reply Martina February 12, 2016 at 7:19 am

The Things We Keeps sounds really good! I’ll have to add it to my growing list. I totally agree about the fake emails in Mindy Kaling’s book. I love her, but after a while it was like enough already!

  • Reply Kristin February 13, 2016 at 9:03 am

You really killed the books this month.
The Last Anniversary is the ONLY Moriarity I haven’t read yet. I suppose I should.
And Food: A Love Story was amazing. I think my husband and I should listen to it together on a long car trip.
